Not Symbian, but hopefully of interest to any ex-Psion or ex-Nokia Communicator users, it seems the general form factor has been revived, with a new startup, PsiXpda, with photo below, offering a clamshell high spec, QWERTY-driven part-PDA, part-laptop. And, impressively, far from being vapourware, it's available next week. See below for links and details.
Read on in the full article.
I have M1 MBook, similar but no 3G. How for this PSIXPDA?
EDIT - a bit of quick research on Google suggests a special launch price of 500, seems okay to me!
Well... WOW!
OK. First thing that lept of the page for me was this:
"Full USB port for peripherals, expansion and alternative operating system installations"
Nice! Will seriously look at this. The N900 could have a challenger here...
why do i keep thinking "HTC Advantage"?
Please tell me however that the 2.5mm headphone socket is a printing error, and it should really say 3.5mm?
Why, oh why would they do this on a device this size?
Kev
Just got home and actually had a look.
:icon14: 32mb of video ram! 1gb of ram. 16gb SSD. Its got an SSD! 😎
:icon13: Win Xp powered by a 1850MaH battery..... Don't forget your charger!
And why isn't there a single picture of it closed? Anywhere? Either on their site or off?
Yummm.. but needs 2GB and cut down Win 7 me thinks..
was thinking about a "PDA" device - and this is a better candidate than the N900 since they have no plans to bring it to Aus
Wow, now this is some cool news! I just wonder if they'll sell one to someone over here in the technologically-deprived USA. I want one!
This looks like a very good device to fill that niche which has existed since the sad demise of Psion. It looks like it would offer almost all of the capabilities of my Eee 900, in an obviously much more portable package...very cool indeed!
Any word on the construction/build quality (how much plastic vs. metal, does the lid/display flex appreciably, quality/feel of the keyboard, etc.)? How about battery life specs? Can the processor be underclocked to consume less battery power and generate less heat? Are the RAM and SSD user-swappable (as they are in my Eee)? Does it have VGA or other video out?
And it certainly fits in with Symbian, as it should work nicely sharing a phone's connection by BT, as well as being about the most portable way possible to run PC Suite (etc.).

I don't think the Psion Revo or 5MX had a D-Pad or missed having one. Don't like D-Pads myself.
Perhaps the device you are looking for is a Nintendo DSi.
I very much like this, best thing to come out of Croydon apart from the A23.
Before I would buy it I would like to see a different OS. XP is not going to make this more attractive than a Netbook at half the price.
The PSIXPDA supports 3 kinds of 3G! No need to connect via Bt to your phone. If you want a small Psion 5 size XP machine then I recommend the M1 Mbook, has a better notebook spec than the PSIXPDA but no 3G! See the M1 Mbook here: http://uk.dynamism.com/#Product=umid I have one and is work better than you'd think. There will also be a much better speced M2 available soon: http://www.slashgear.com/umid-mbook-m2-debuts-faster-cpu-499-in-q4-video-2257507/
Am I missing something? Where is the connection to Psion or their EPOC? Oay its an Ex-service technician but that's all.
No exclusive OS, no clamshell but rather a slider - so it needs a pouch or case instead of being closed and protected. And the keyboard also doesn't appeal to me, since it has not this big spacing and keytravel like on the 5mx.
Please explain, what sets this device apart from a UMID m1 or a Viliv s5 except for the keyboard. I could alos go and buy a N900, any HTC slider or the original, a Psion 5mx - well I like Palm better 😉
Right then, given I'm partly behind this...
Jah, N0k1a:
Yes we're selling at 500 inc vat int he UK. Happy to ship to Europe and North America as well. Sales will open some point in the next week or so.
Reindeer:
Glad you saw that you can boot from the USB
Kev:
As mentioned we've had a some feedback on the headset socket and I;ve fed it back to the design team.
UKJeeper:
Alternativly a spare battery, which is what I do for attending conferences.
Bchliu:
THe Windows 7 licence cost would increase the price, and personally XP does well on a mobile device. The RAM amy seem an issue but I lived with a 512MB proto for a few months and the performance was acceptable even at that.
N0k1a:
I'll leave it to others to comment on the construction. Battery goes between 2hrs 3min and 4 hrs depending on how much online work you do.
Unregistered 1:
Note the comments on the USB port!
Jah:
Yes the Mbook2 is due, and I epect that to hve a similar price point for the similar spec machines.

I read the point about the USB port allowing another OS. So what OSes are tested and work with all devices? Do I have to port them myself?

By "devices" I meant device drivers.
@Ewan
the key reason the Psions were successful is because of the software and hardware integration. Now with the issue I had/have with my M1 Mbook is that there are very few (none in fact) PIM apps that can work well in a small screen. I use Outlook 2007 and have adjusted fonts etc to get a useable interface. Also with the M1 you get a separate UI app called POT (see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXd_XfCBwqo). It would be great if you/PSIXPDA could identify apps that work well in a 5" screen format.
This reminds me more of the old Windows CE devices than Psion.
One more point 😉 you can run the EPOC simulator on these XP devices and it nearly feels like you using a connected colour Psion 5 😊
This reminds me: whatever happened to the Nokia Booklet 3G? It's holiday shopping season already, and it's not for sale, not even pre-order.
1. Why no GPS?! So great screen w/o navigation!.. 😞(
2. Shipping with lower cost & preinstalled (or bundled) Linux?
3. Any chance to equip with SIM card slot? There are everything to be best communicator, but no GPRS %(
4. Why 2.5" headphone jack on such size device?!
Seems _right_ step and promising replacement for my E90.
The Aigo P8861 is a curiously similar beast (albeit less memory) but with a SIM card slot in the back. Have a sniff on Google ; prices on Ebay are around the 400 mark.
