Followup on the Samsung i8910 HD 'report'

You may remember the guy who did the umpteen page 'report' on all the things that are wrong with the Samsung i8910 HD? This was, I have it on good authority, forwarded around rather widely at Samsung HQ and, it transpires, that the author 'Anphase' was invited to a meeting with the appropriate Samsung product manager. Here's Anphase's report of the meeting, along with Samsung's responses, for your interest.

Read on in the full article.

It's funny how much the report says 'there is no demand for feature X'? Sounds pretty much like what Nokia would have to say on the 3D chip issue post N95. Only, that pretty much dealt a solid death blow to ngage.
While it is good to see Samsung actually hearing out the consumers, saying 'not enough demand for X' is NOT what it should be thinking of! Instead, it should think about being a trailblazer and MAKING such features the norm. Like some company called *cough*Apple*cough

all in all, buying this phone was a learning experience. samsung's symbian devices are not for me. the hardware is great, but the support has been pretty pathetic so far. and now they tell me we put some hardware inside which we thought people don't need anyway, so we decided to not code for it. and all i can see is "we didn't feel the need to waste any more time on this device, after all we had to launch our omnia 2 in the same month"

Yes, I HATE it when companies say "There's no demand for..." when it's patently obvious that, by asking the question, users ARE demanding feature X etc.

Often no demand means very little demand. So the cost of development isn't justified by a few extra sales - which is the case with FM transmittters, Xenon etc. These are things that are needed by relatively few people.

i think the i8910 is a bit of a different story. when the phone was first announced, there was news of an hdmi port, and from all the prerelease pictures, the phone had a metallic body, fm transmitter, xenon flash etc.

samsung did a fair job (as fair as they ever did with symbian, anyway) but when you overhype a product like that and make it sound like god of phones, then you deliver or you have fun with the negative criticisms.

iPhone users don't even need a flash. Googlephone users will make do with a single LED.

I've just read that the latest Google OS only has three home pages giving 48 application/weblink slots. How can any self-respecting geek exist with a phone like that 😉

Bearing in mind that "most users" are not the phone geeks who read or comment on this or other websites; most users have indeed never heard of FM transmitter or video editing or other "must have" (as the geeks see them) features of smartphones.

What is interesting, if you read this report carefully, is that Samsung haven't actually said or promised anything which they hadn't already said or promised to other people at other times.

Believe it or not, Samsung are actually doing quite a nice job on the next i8910 firmware - I'm running a beta version of the kinetic scrolling firmware right now, and barring one or two bugs (which WILL be fixed before public release) it pretty much transforms the use of the phone... it's what a capacitive touchscreen S60 phone always needed. (and of course, this beats the N97 / N97 mini as resistive touchscreens are simply no good for kinetic scrolling)

I think its great that they have taken you seriously and tried to address some of the issues mentioned.

The problem seems to be that the market for this superphone is relatively small and as such they will not be putting to much in the way of resource into it for this very reason. If it was as popular as other phones and they were selling them by the bucket load I'd say it would be a different story....

My main gripes with it are:

1. When surfing either in the built in browser or Opera if I touch the screen to move the page around it annoyingly swipes to either the photo contacts page or applications and I have to click the icon for web to get back to it
2. The camera its so slow after the last update (I have unbranded Orange running latest Italian Firmware) and it takes forever to take the next picture. As well as the fact that if you want anti shake you can't if you are in auto focus or the flash is on.
3. No anti shake in Video...
4. For having 2 seperate processors I don't really think the phone is that fast compared to my previous 5800, 6220 classic and N95. In fact not much different at all.
5. take a picture and try to send as mms how do you reduce in size to send. previous phones so well polished in that regard.

thinking about it now I could go on but won't I'll wait for the next update and see what it is like plus its the N900 next for me if it ever comes to O2....

I did buy it because I like the idea of a combination of Phone and Camera but I have found the camera so unreliable mainly as its so damn slow.. as for going to the gallery.......talk about a circuitous route and damn slow.

Great Site Steve (its on my feeds which I read everyday) and great work Anaphase much appreciated from the i8910 enthusiasts.

Yes heard of FM transmitter would love it as well so don't need other ways to listen to music from my phone...you can buy an app for the iphone for this apparently....
