UK orange P800 crashes

13 replies · 3,431 views · Started 17 March 2003

hi there,

i got my orange uk p800 on the day of release. It's been great, far better then i expected. Was fine for the first couple of weeks of usage.

However now it seems to crash randomly with that 10second screen, it also seems to crash and stop responding to touch screen input. It sometimes crashes as well and the screen just stays blank when the flip is closed and refuses to come back on.

the only way to get it working sometimes is to take out the battery and sim card, then put it back in and switch it on again.

It seems as if the crashing often occurs when it recieves an sms. or when wanting it to come back from when the screen is blank in flip closed mode.

To try and fix it i made a backup of the phone, did a master reset and restored the backup, but it is still happening, about 2 - 3 times a day (though it is heavily used)

anyone else been having this problem? any thoughts? is the only option to restore from an earlyer backup and lose some of my data?

apps currently installed (if anyone has noticed problems with any of these):

full screen picture
handy day
Jpong800
jzip
opera
putty
quicktimer
scicalc
stuntrun
symirc
tipicme

I had a similar problem with frequent failures in the way you describe.

The Master Reset appears to have done the job for me although I
re-sychronised data and re-installed the applications.

Once again we wait to see what the new firmware will bring.

Mine was fine until I installed the demo version of Handy day and I received the 10 second reboot screen.

I dont know whether it was Handyday or a repeated lack of signal though as I was on the Tube on Saturday and I rarely go on it these days.

Needless to say I uninstalled Handyday

Z.

Handyday lasted 2 days on my p800 before I uninstalled it. Nice idea, very buggy though....

I had the same problem with my Orange P800.

I called Customer Support, it was diagnosed as faulty.

I got a new one the next day and haven't had a problem since.

Jon.

I've had my Orange P800 since a couple of days after the release, and it's pretty much fine.

I get the occasional crash that requires the power button to be held down to restart it, but it's not that common.

The only apps I have in common with the first poster though are Handy Day and Opera.

Not had a single problem since installing Handy Day, but I don't think I've used Opera since.

Opera definitely seems to make it a bit flaky and appears to have been the main cause of any crashes I have had. I assumed that was to do with making it run low on memory or something.

I have crashing probs also. Got my phone a few weeks ago from orange. However, it seems to only occur when i come off the underground tube. Weird. Haven't got Handy Day Installed though. Only Opera.

I thought this was worth mentioning.

IF your phone crashes and you take a backup of the phone, perform a master reset, then restore the backup of course it's going to crash again because you just returned it to exactly the state it was in prior to the master reset.

What you should do is backup the phone regularly and restore from the last working backup version.

Just change your Backup file to a .zip file and open it with a zip-Software to adjudt aour backup needs.....

I've had a few system failures (power off for 10s) and app crashes. I called Sony Ericsson who told me there's a new version of the Organiser s/w (R1G05 I think - i'm on R1F01).

Unfortunately the only way to upgrade is to take it to one of the very few SE service centres or to send it off to SE. No updates over the internet (as mentioned previously).

The jog dial on mine is poorly fitted too but I really can't be bothered getting a replacement... it'll probably still have the same software.

mine started crashing again (no handy day) and finally refused to switch on at all. Phoned orange and they have replaced it same day.

hope the new one doesn't have the same problems.

Becareful with orange replacements as they are refurbs and sometimes the quality is really poor. Had quite a few phones replaced, and after a while on the refurbs, the keypads wouldn't press properly, the reception quality was poor and on two occassions when i opned up the phones, i found the circuitboard was smoked. you are often better off getting it fixed by SE. However, since the P800 is relatively new, hopefully you won't experience any probs with the refurbs -yet.
