Persuade me not to :)

I know this has been talked about a lot before and i am also one of you who has had just about enough of the n97s poor performance... however i would really like to hear your thoughts...

I was playing around with my friends iPhone 3Gs this morning for about an hour and i could not believe how responsive the OS was and also how much pleasure it was to browse the internet... all the apps are also right there in front of you and i couldn't believe how quick the apps opened and how responsive they were...

In the few hours i have been in to Vodafone to see how much it was going to cost me to cancel my contract and then went into O2 to see what the cost of getting set up on the iPhone was... then i came home and spent over an hour reading "n97 vs iPhone" reviews...

I don't really think anyone can say that either phone is better than the other as i truely believe that it depends on what features and functions are most valuable to you... and also what type of a phone user are you

I have studied the pros and cons of both phones and picked out what features are most valuable to me:

- responsive userface (iPhone wins IMO)
- best internet capability (web and email) (iPhone wins IMO - the pinch function on the iPhone is an essential to me now)

then closely falling behind the 2 above in no particular order would be:
- maps (n97 wins IMO)
- apps (iPhone wins IMO)
- music (iPhone wins IMO)
- camera (n97 wins IMO)

From the above features, i think it is clear to see that i now happen to think that the iPhone 3GS is a better phone than the n97 (based on what features are most valuable to me).

I know the n97 beats the iPhone in other areas and specifics that i have not mentioned and for that reason most of you have chosen the n97 over the iPhone.

Ok, first of all thank you for bothering to read down this far on my thread... (sorry for the long thread but this issue is really starting to annoy me as i am a heavy phone user)... secondly and the reason for my post:

Based on what i have said above (and keep in mind what features of a phone are most valuable to me) WHY SHOULD I NOT CHANGE OVER TO AN IPHONE... Am i missing something or leaving something out...

I can't stop asking myself why did i get an n97 instead of an iPhone in the first place...

thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions on this

1) when the battery is broken
2) when you need a surplus of memory

More to come , I think ....

😊 Regards jApi NL

Ok cool, thanks for your reply...

- battery is not really a concern as surely they would have to replace the phone if it was faulty (correct me if i am wrong)
- memory is defo not a problem for me as i don't have any music on my n97 as i don't use it for that... i have a 4gb ipod nano for my music, which i would be replacing with the iPhone if i got it...

thanks for the reply as i will use and compare your points before deciding, thanks...

The iPhone definitely is all round more responsive and sleeker, personally I wouldn't be happy with one for countless reasons, but I can see why people do get them.

Despite that the iPhones do also suffer from problems - my mate has a 3GS and the other day it spent a good few hours thinking there were headphones plugged in, and therefore wouldn't play any calls, music, or other sounds through the phones speaker. He tried plugging headphones in and out, turning it off and on and blowing compressed air into the headphone jack with no result until it just randomly started working properly again.

No idea if that's a common problem or anything - just saying they're not perfect, and at least the major N97 problems are widespread enough that you can easily find info on them, and a service centre near you to get it fixed in a day under warranty. I'd imagine Apple stuff would always involve sending it away for any warranty fixes.

Cool, thanks for the reply... i agree but every phone has their problems... however the reason for changing would be for the performance and internet (web & email)... i am not sure a firmware upgrade of any kind would make the n97 more responsive as i believe the poor touch screen performance is down to the hardware rather than the software

Get the Iphone - despite good features, the N97 just seems dated now.

I would have got one in a shot but it lacked an FM radio which I really wanted.

If I was to buy again now I'd be looking at an HTC - the HD2 has pretty much all the features of the N97 but with the capacitive screen and fancy interface of the Iphone (albeit an over laid OS on top of windows).

The other option is the Nexus one running Android! 😃

Like so get the iPhone (you don't even have to move to O2)

The N97 is a very poor phone anyway and is a whole generation out of date in hardware terms ad the OS/UI is garbage.

My girlfriend on her iPhone can beat me to any rehular everyday task on her iPhone normally by an embarrassingly large margin because of quicker more direct altogether bettter though out UI , better input (txst correction), faster rendering, more functional apps when needed and don't even listen to the so called multi- tasking benefits as the N97 hardware is so poor it can't (run Nokia Messaging, Nimbuzz and have game open - X6 also can't see Ewan's current reviews) and iPhone has no issues running core funtions (music email etc) cioncurrently and when switch programmes and it closes one down it reopens at same point unlike N97 when it has to drop stuff.

Only caveat would be I guess maybe wait for new iPhone in summer or have good look at Nexus One apparently being accelerated to Voda, could be couple of weeks, owing to demand and the N900 looks lovely if you want a great browser, just think it isn't quite cooked yet. There's a lot of great stuff out there that really brings the "computer in your pocket" connected vision alive the N97 isn't one of them. As my g/f who had an N95 8GB before her iPhone commented, they haven't really done anything other than stick touch on Symbian and reuse the same platform and she felt even her N95 8GB which she loved was a bit tired now the whole package is plain antiquated.

thanks for the great post... i have 6 months left on my vodafone (Ireland) contract but it will only cost me 100 to cancel it... Vodafone (Ireland) will be bring ing out the iPhone in March but like you said there will be a new iPhone out in July so i want to get at least 6 months with the 3Gs with a view of upgrading to the 4G iPhone in the summer...

You never really mentioned what is CURRENTLY wrong-with, or which functions (for you) are inferior on the N97 compared to other manufacturers?
Is there any pressing need for you to get rid of your N97 immediately?

COST is the major reason I would advise you not to get an iPhone now. You are so close to the end of your Vodafone contract, why not just wait until it expires and save €100?

I also understand your concerns that a new iPhone is due in the summer - and for that very reason I personally would not buy a 3GS right now if I were you. A colleage of mine made the consious decision almost exactly 1 year ago NOT to buy an iPhone as he knew the 3GS was coming out in 2009. He knew he would not be able to stop himself upgrading to the 3GS when it was released and therefore put his money in a savings account and waited until he could get a 3GS.

The new 4G iPhone will probably be more expensive than the 3GS so you could use the €100 saved by not cancelling now, towards the higher cost model later.

I am not saying stay with Nokia forever if you feel let down by your N97 experience. However, if your N97 is basically working OK and you can live with it another 6 months, then do that and see what phone models and manufacturers at that time are getting the best reviews...whether it's the 4G iPhone, Android, or something else. 😉

The real answer is to get a Google Nexus One. I can't believe how amazingly great it is. I have just moved to it and switched operators to TMO from ATT to get 7.6Mbps HSPA+.

It really is *much* better than the iPhone. Incredibly fast, the screen is huge 800x480 vs 640x360 (N97) and 480x360 (iPhone)... it's truly beautiful.

The phone is SOOO responsive... it just works great. Apps abound and are useful. Games are great, graphically really pretty and did I say Fast.

Will post a bigger review later for N97'ers wanting to switch. But right now, my N97 is going in my Nokia pile until I hope they publish a new UI.

- Simple things like bluetooth sync to my BMW are 2x faster, and it NEVER drops bluetooth connection
- Music player *isn't* as good (BUT I just found MixZing, which is truly brilliant...)
- Camera isn't as feature rich, but I'm sure that the next build will cover that
- Memory/storage is the biggest problem with the N1... it only has 16gb... not enough for my music... But 32gb MicroSDs are coming very soon.
- Voice support is truly wow. It uses the network to both allow you to talk emails/texts and search, but also amazingly it will real time translate into other languages. Speak English - and it converts to Japanese.
- 512MB of application memory... can you believe it's actually almost impossible to shutdown applications? Droid just leaves them all running... most apps don't even have a shutdown/close/quit button! Stuff just keeps going.
- Browser that is super fast - but no Flash yet... that stinks
- GOOGLE VOICE that is seamlessly integrated. All international calls just go out over GVoice, with far less costs than TMO or ATT (or even Skype)... no crappy Fring to install... it just works...

I LOVE NOKIA, I have 40+ phones in my library... I worked there and built out the email products like E71 and it's predecessors... it's a sad day for me to call end to Symbian... but S60 touch is woeful compared to Droid. I really hope that Symbian^3 is great... but I'm not holding my breath 😞.

If you take pictures lots, or like them, the camera is a win easy, the camera on the iPhone is really bad. My dad has a 3GS and I'd say its the failing point of the phone. Of course, till iPhone 4 comes out this year with a 5MP camera, will be a different story.

If I really had to buy now, I'd be looking at the N900 and the Nexus One. Neither without their faults, but then there is no 'perfect smartphone'.

I'm glad someone mentioned the BMW integration. I HAVEN'T got my N97 to hook up, it keeps disconnecting. However my 6300 works flawlessly.

O2 aren't the only company who do the iPhone now (UK). Orange and Voda do. T-Mob to follow soon.I think O2 still have the better plans though.

Have a look at the UK register site... 3 negative Google Smartphones reports today alone! (and other negative Android and Google related negative articles).
Is the grass really greener? It's not only Nokia who messes up after all...

Today I finally had the GPS/scratched lens sorted and what a difference it has made. The GPS gets a fix in about 10 seconds and I now get a constant 8 sats.
I have had to wait about 5 weeks for the part to come in to my local NCC.
The thing is that last week I ordered a Google Nexus One.
I have been frustrated with the N97 since I purchased it in June of last year. I had hoped to have a fix for the appalling speaker-phone but alas it is now too late.
I probably will never get another Nokia phone.
It maybe the case that I will end up being a beta tester again for the Nexus One but from some of the feedback I have read, it seems to be an awesome phone. Of course some people are having teething troubles with the N1 but then again I have been having teething troubles with my original N97 and its three replacements so I cant see the Nexus One being anywhere near as bad.......only time will tell.
Now I have to get down to selling my N97
