Ovi Suite hits 2.0.2.42

As with the Evernote widget yesterday, I think the time has come to start recommending that you consider removing Nokia PC Suite and consider installing Ovi Suite, provided you have a reasonably recent PC. The latter has just been updated to v2.0.2.42 (according to NokNok) and its resource requirements have been steadily coming down from the stratospherics of the early betas. Comments welcome if you're feeling brave - has Ovi Suite come of age now?

Read on in the full article.

But it still cannot install programs on my mobile or even simply transfer non-media files between my PC and my mobile as PC Suite does (Unless I am missing something).

Yet when I check for upgrades with PC Suite it wants to be replaced with Ovi Suite. So why has Nokia now replaced PC Suite with Ovi Suite and how does Nokia expect me to carry out those basic operations? The only way I can find is to ignore Ovi Suite and use Windows Explorer on my PC. Surely this is not Nokia's intention.

It probably IS their intention - through 'Data transfer' mode (or whatever it's called on your device) - that way, the phone's disks become desktop disks etc.

For me, Ovi Suite fails in three main ways as the moment:

1. Speed. It takes an absolute age to synchronise my N96 with Outlook. It sits there "preparing to synch" for at least half an hour.

2. Lack of Lotus Notes support. I use Lotus Notes at work as my main calendar. I really need to synch with it. If I can't, then I have to enter the appointmnets manually. I would do this with the calendar app in PC Suite. Unfortunately:

3. Lack of Calendar app. This just seems to have been missed. I hope it comes along later.

whats up with this software?? when i want to syn my n97 there are so many bugs!! pictures are more than i have , music syn doesnt work! sms are oki.
contacts seems be right...there is a lot to do!!

I see your point but to me that just makes things more inconvenient - certainly when installing programs I don't want to first have to load the program onto the phone - but there again I suppose Nokia wants me to buy through Ovi Store not All About Symbian 😉

I believe it does support sis files installation... "Opening" one with the Ovi Suite works for me. If you select "install" Ovi suite informs that "app is being installed" and then "complete the installation process on the phone.

Never used Nokia PC suite decided to go straight to OVI Suite running 2.0.2.42 and has been relatively seemless and painfree all in all one of my better Nokia experiences I have to say.

When first installed it was overly intrusive and sync'd in all 5,000 + images on my PC drive unasked for which might have been a bit awkward as first time opened prog had my g/f with me and it displays rolling images, reckon someone might want to have a think about this 😉 . Also having that many images in it slowed it down quite a bit especially when syncing, now I've got rid of them it's much better after all I only want it to handle the images from my phone not my life so I that's why I say it's a bit overly intrusive but a lot of these modern sync-y programmes are.

I have to say overall it's sync's have speeded up (may've been new version) and just saved me having fraxxd my phone when installing the torch freeware app as recommended on AAS Freeware list (be warned), so feeling quite well disposed towards it - and was able to retrieve calendar appointment from my Ovi.com sync so all in all could've been lot worse after having to do the "4 fingered salute".

you can install sis(x) files on your s60 phone connected to ovi suite 2.0 by dragging the file to the phone icon (lower left side of the window) 😉

Brilliant - thanks for the tip.

I use the calendar sync in pcsuite with my n97. ovi suite has totally messed up multiple aspects. Some (not all) meetings are now off by an hour. some contact birthdays (again some not all) are off by a day. I've no way of cleaning this mess up! avoid and stick to pcsuite until ovi gets further on.....

I've had my 5800 just over a week now (upgraded from 6300) One of my main reasons for sticking with Nokia was PCSuite because it actually works properly unlike some of the mobile sync offerings. Since the getting 5800 I've put Ovi onto my home PC but left PCS on my work PC. I honestly can't see that Ovi does anything better than PCS did and currently (as already mentioned) it lacks calendar support, I'll keep persevering with it at home but won't be removing PCS yet and won't be installing Ovi in the office.

Ditto.

Or you can just click on the sis(x) file and it get installed on the phone, same as in PC Suite. Am I missing something here? I don't see where the problem is.

I run three versions of PC Suite - Nokia (E72); Sony Ericsson (P1i) and Samsung (i8910) although obviously not simultaneously 😊 Just clicking on an sis(x) file gets my PC very confused 😊

@ Steve Lichfield

Steve, if it's now getting the to level where you recommend we now consider ditching PC Suite, and moving over to Ovi Suite, perhaps you'd also care to recommend what I then use for:

a) My simple one step Video Conversion needs, and:

b) What I use to BULK manage my contacts.

CLARIFICATION, before you begin to respond mate...

Firstly, I am more than aware that BETTER Video file conversion utilities exist for ME, to do more, such as Handbrake, Quicktime Pro, etc. etc. I already DO use these, for more intensive/advanced stuff.

But for simple video conversion, you cannot beat Nokia Video Manager. Nor would I even DREAM of recommending to computer-not-so-literate family and friends, that they attempt to learn Handbrake etc, when all they want is a simple quick acceptable conversion of a Video Format, over to their phone.

And for (b), let me also explain...

With PC Suite, contacts are managed in a much more usable COLUMN based manner. Amongst other things, this allows me to do speedy, simple multiple contacts deletes, multiple contacts grouping, and best of all, by utilising the NOTES field, and having this populated with the name of the Contacts Group I need, I can in no time at all, load up my contacts, sort by "Notes", multiple select all those with the same Notes Tag (i.e Caller Group name) and then add them to a Caller Group in seconds with a right-click on the multiple selected entries. Thus meaning that no matter what phone I move to or from, I can keep my Caller Groups intact, as some don't allow this using the Switch/Transfer Tool (and this is just an example of one such area - there are many more that this column based management gets used for).

ALL of this sort of thing is removed in Ovi Suite, with it's much simplified (sanitized if you will) interface and approach.

And forgive me, but were you to say, that's the selling point with Ovi Suite - a more sanitized, simplified approach, making it 'easier' for users, how does having to learn a whole new advanced Video Conversion Tool fit into that philosophy...?

For sure, this rant is not aimed at you, but by commenting that you are near ready to recommend that people move to Ovi Suite, then one of us has to pull you up for the massive shortcomings in such a recommendation.

Unless and until (which I doubt they will EVER do), Nokia allow proper Contacts Management, and include a simple Video Converter, then Ovi Suite will NEVER EVER be a tool I can use to replace PC Suite.

But Nokia are not listening, despite me repeatedly telling them all this direct (NDA's prevent me saying any further, in terms of where future versions are headed).

So PLEASE Steve, not only wholly reconsider your comments, but use your influence with Nokia (public profile, if nothing else) to point out these shortcomings to them, as it's clear they are wholly aware, but also completely not bothered...

The idea of Ovi was to make Nokia phones look even more attractive. But Ovi services and software are so bad, I now want to avoid Nokia, because I know Ovi doesn't come with HTC, Motorola, Samsung, etc.

PC Suite is good example: rewrite as Ovi, it doesn't work.

All the other phone guys get me to Flickr, GMail, my IMAP mail ... without Ovi getting in the way, or being rammed down my throat.

Nokia you make good phones - some of your phones are great. Please find new management with guts who will kill Ovi and save Nokia.

I have to say, I have to agree with the above sentiments. Last April, I finally put my Palm TX in a drawer and bought a 5800 XM. What a really fine piece of hardware. I love symbian, even with the beta-ish ness of the S60v5 first device and slower than I hoped software development. PCSuite is what Palm deskto should have been.

But Ovi is just horrible. Luckily, so far, it is also completely avoidable. And when I say Ovi, I mean all of it. The desktop, the web services, the store, all of it. What can you say about a contacts service that throws out your landline numbers when you sync. 😮 Yup, I have to retype them all in on the web and then it will keep them, but i I sync from the device and the contact with the landline number hasn't already been created on the web, it will toss the number. The webmail client won't use the contacts client as an address book. It goes on and on, with OVI Files being pretty much the only bright spot in the mix (Ovi maps seems ok, but I don't ue mapping that much).

How a company that claims, I think, that it's future is in services as much or more than the hardware, can float such alpha-level and just plain bad services is beyond me.

It is also astonishing to me how much of the press on Nokia gives them a pass on it.

I would like to stay with Nokia. As long as I am not forced to go with Ovi services, I will.

@ hisyam...

Website Security Certificate Expired on 14/01/10

(The demo account page).

So you might want to have a word, as that's enough cause to turn 99.999% of people away instantly.

Setting that aside though, as I can see it's a recent expiration, my alarm bells are not ringing too much just yet, so I have still downloaded it, and will install it and give it try.

The big problem here of course, is going to be one of trust, as in effect, whilst it is INCREDIBLE that you can back up so much of my data for me, call logs, texts, photos, the whole lot, it's ALSO worrying that a previously unheard of website/company, will in effect then have ACCESS to all this data.

Rest assured I am not insinuating anything nefarious on their part.

Just pointing out that as consumers have not heard of rseven, most will be very reticent about actually sharing all this data with a new startup...

I have a nokia N95 8gb with version 31.0.015 on it as its fw version.
Have installed Nokia ovi files widget 1.2.1.1 on it, but there seems to be a problem , while exeuting the widget , i get an error that its an untrusted cert and asks if i should continue , when i choose YES , it shuts off. Im really enjoying the feature of ovi files provided by nokia and would really want a more convenient way to connect to ovi files rather than going through the browser and selecting (files.ovi.com).
please help.
thanks and regards,

I have read about the Ovi Suits from your mention link. I knew that Ovi Suits is the updated version of Nokia PC Suits. But in Ovi Suits there is some disadvantages which mention as below:
(1) Less Speed as compare with PC Suit.
(2) Lack of Lotus Notes support.
(3) Lack of Calendar application.
