How universal are all these bugs on the N97 Mini?

16 replies · 8,696 views · Started 18 January 2010

Randomly Resets during phone calls.
Completley freezes up and ALL my homepage widgets dissipear until i reset.
Txts dont come through until i reset hand set.
Battery jumps from Full bars to one in a matter of seconds.
Phone unlocks itself after i recieve delivery reports after ive locked it.
Takes several attaepts for the Lock switch to lock occasionaly.

Ive had three of this handset, and im resetting my phone atleast 10 - 11 times a day, ive reinstalled firmware once already. When it worked i loved this phone, just seems like a pile of shit now.

I don't have ANY of your problems. I reboot my handset perhaps once a week.
I have V20 FW UK CV (Unbranded). If you are on anything less than V20 FW then you probably have network branded sh*t FW.

Re-installing the same FW is pointless, despite what Nokia recommend.
It's the equivalent of SkyUK asking you to reboot your receiver no matter what fault you report, or a computer helpline asking you to reboot the PC before calling back.

You MAY have installed some 3rd party app which isn't stable on the N97. Try formatting both the internal and mass memory and run the phone for a few days with nothing installed.
If the phone is more stable, then you have bad app(s), if not, then send the N967 to Nokia for repair and request de-branded FW also).

However, many many users on AAS forums do have issues similar issues, so I am sure you will get lots of other more helpful responses. 😉

i dont have ANY of these problems either. not a single one. remember when you hard reset your n97, you ALSO have to format the internal mass memory because its possible that whatever bugs you have will carry over from the mass memory for example if you have some apps installed on mass memory, those same bugs will still be there after the hard reset. therefore you have to format mass memory as well.

Although why should we have to spend hours nannying and rebuilding our phones reinstalling apps accounts etc. Full rebuild must take getting close to a day by the time everything's done (music apps etc.).

Why can't the OS be designed to take care of it for us.

Yeah I'm willing to do that when the (mystical) next firmware comes out but having already spent hours rebuilding my phone twice in last 6weeks (having to rebuild my contacts after Ovi suite obilterated them last night be interleaving all the data randomly amongst them) and having to wait nearly 8weeks trying to get Cam/GPS fix done (still pretty much sucks) I'm not really up for investing (hah wasting) much more time in this.

If I was a lone example fair enough maybe - just send it in but I'm not. I'm so not. Look at the forums at Nokia discussions on the N97 in N series sub-forum and Software Updates sub-forum, where thay've had to delete N97 threads becasue they were getting so long full of bugs problems dissatisfied usersleaving Nokia etc. The Nokia Users N97 forums are full of the same thing as are the forums here at AAS - this really isn't an isolated case of the odd bad egg this is a complete product failure on a Ford Edsel scale

For you lucky few whose N97's are stable and fast, please tell us just what applications you ARE running (i.e. that are "safe"😉.

In my opinion, a simple reboot should clear a dodgy app.

The problem is when you can't do a "simple" reboot because you get the WSOD and have to go through extract steps to clear it.

Firstly, it takes me about 2 hours to reinstall from scratch @25 apps including the full Europe wide OVI MAPS (I keep a copy of cities folder on my PC) - nobody needs to take a full day. NOBODY.

Secondly, as discussed sooooo many times I am sick of repeating it - Nokia and OVI cannot be held responsible for BAD APPS from 3rd parties (and cracked pirated ones).

With V20 Generic FW, the N97 is perfectly stable - it's only once you mess around with what's installed that problems start to appear.

rdcinhou wrote: In my opinion, a simple reboot should clear a dodgy app.

A simple reboot will not cure a bad app that has embedded itself in the OS - particularly any app that auto-runs at startup or runs in the background.

Even removing such an app cannot be guaranteed to repair any damage done - MAC-OS and MS Windows OS can just as easily be trashed by bad apps or a virus.

And as discussed soooooooooooooo many times before and yet it doesn't seem to register I have installed no Apps from ANY source other than OVI store and the Nokia SOftware Update repositories. And still there I am rebuilding it.

snoFlake wrote: I have installed no Apps from ANY source other than OVI store and the Nokia SOftware Update repositories.

I was not aware Nokia or Ovi ever guaranteed 3rd party apps they host as totally bug free?
To be fair you have a valid complaint against poor testing at Nokia & OVI before making 3rd party apps available.
If it's of value to you I will compile a list of apps in my stable N97 and post on AAS?

Yeah that would be really interseting and I'll try to get together a list of my apps

Maybe if enough of us do this we might be able to find some commonality and come up with some patterns/strategy 😎

The list below is everything which appears in Applications Manager on my N97 (some may be pre-installed with the FW?). As far as possible I always install the latest versions.

I'm beginning to think that maybe dez borders and I should put our N97's up for sale as we seem to have the only working one's. 😃

lol The a*se has fallen out of the 2nd hand market for N97's, so probs best keeping them until the 2yr warranty runs out or Nokia goes bust... unless someone wants to swap mine for an iPhone 3GS!
Nice to see another user with a fair number of installed apps yet a perfectly stable handset. Shame there's so few of us!

Incidentally, if the networks dropped the N97 because of 20+% returns, then does't that = the majority of the other 80-% are more or less happy with the N97? They cant all have sold them on fleabay...
I reckon that for every AAS member there's 1000's of N97 owners who don't post online. Many will have problems, but the majority probably have no major issues.
A friend in my town has one and thinks its his best ever mob. He has Vodafone branded FW and says he hasn't had any issues after 3 months use.

P.S. I do not dispute that the buggy FW (pre 2.0) and the GPS/lens-scratch issues have seriously damaged Nokia's reputation and do sympathyse with early-adopters who had months of hassle.

Interesting thread. My N97 has not had any major issues on the v20 firmware - but then I never had than many with the original one either (aside from some of the design issues with Widgets).

I recently met up with an old friend who I hadn't seen for ages who pulled out an N97, said he bought it two or three months ago and started telling me how much he loved it.

And I think what dez says is true there's an awful lot of people who are perfectly happy. And of course, for the miniorty inclined to post online, most of them will only actually do so if they have a problem... The irony of course is that you often see more compaints about phones that have sold well regardless of how good they are. Example - Google search for: Nokia N97 problem (1,597,000 result) iPhone 3GS problem (25,500,000 results) - yes total unscientific etc etc, but hopefully people see the point.

My N97 came with V11 and subsequently updated to V12. It was relatively fine except for the ring tone that goes to the default one. After two months I got to V20. Thats when some problems surfaced. The phone will restart after it has been turned on. Error message system error, memory low close some applications. When this happened I have to re-start my phone. Then its fine for a while.
I reformatted the phone and the mass memory. I updated Ovi store, Maps and re-installed all the applications, just to be sure. (I did not install the back-up). It would be fine for a while then it strikes again.
I reformatted the phone once again and I am re-installing the applications one at a time. So far I have updated the Ovi store, Maps, installed the licensed version of Adobe reader and Quickoffice Premier. Up to now the phone is behaving well. I still have to install Handy Taskman, Worldmate, Y-browser, some games, some free ware that came with the phone (from Ovi store) and MSDict.
Judging from this, perhaps something is not compatible that may have cause the problem. I will have to wait till it happens and isolate it.
In all I am happy with this phone.

Here we go

Some of these came with it but some of the original ones got wiped in one of the resets I had to do - Certainly BBC iPlayer, Facebook & YouTube got wiped and had to be reintsalled from Ovi and Nokia Messaging had to be downloaded wheras it had come on board so for these I've no idea if I now have a different version form the original. Some other programmes weirdly got blitzed in last crash (WSOD) and reset and had to be redownloaded such as Nimbuzz and Snaptu whilst others survived perfectly fine all were installed on E: , strange. I'm not sure what was on C: vs E: when I received the phone back from Cam/GPS repair as it was a replacement handset that had already been flashed, I have always set all programmes where possible to install to E: but have not switched message storage to E: becase it keeps resetting. Some C: must have been freed during my rebuilds because I've gone from 30 Mb maintainable free to 45MB or so without clearing cache etc.

There obviously are some not mentioned in the Apps manager such as the preinstalled package loaders for Joiku QIk etc some of which like Traveller seem to have disappeared.

Also there were some programmes installed by me before last WSOD which I have not reinstalled.

Google Mobile App (installed form Google) inc Voice search
Octopuzzle
Backcountry Ski

Fring which I had uninstalled again before last WSOD

There was a newer version of OVI maps offered to me by updater that has not been offered again (not the beta labs vaersion) and I had to redownload Nokia Messaging for email.

I have applied the Memory Reorganiser

Errr that's the best I can remember I think.

Even Yesterday whilst on phone to same person I had one dropped call (I think I live in a marginal 3G spot and if I get call picked up on 3G and lose signal it cannot handle step down to GPRS) and then having called them back phone crashed I think prompted by either Nimbuzz tweet or email being picked up (no way to tell which as it only squeaked a bit and then froze up).

I've had two major freezes, one last week complete lock up followed by WSOD (stcuk at Nokia logo) when trying try reboot after having to pull battery only slved by 4 finger salute reset.

The phone does crash quite regularly I think as much as once a day maybe or I have to power it off. Sometimes I do get 2-3 days off it though. Charged every night.

My homescreen has:

Calendar/Appointments Widget
Shortcut 1
Shortcut 2
Nokia Messaging email
Music Player

I have Nokia messaging and Nimbuzz running most of the time and music player obviously if I've listened to something (I only mention the obvious as this does seem to be a concern re memory leak on the X6)
