Ovi Maps 3.3 Navigation not available for N97

29 replies · 12,790 views · Started 21 January 2010

Pretty much sums up owning this so called flagship. The mini gets it the 5800 gets it but not for the "Classic"

Best Nokia feature announced for some time and pretty much any handset apart from 6month old flagship is going to get it. Why cos of it's useless hardware platform, maybe some of you might are going to get it now.

Any of you defenders want to pick up on what a fabulous buy and ownerrship this has been?

Don't Panic! (or jump the gun)

Ovi Maps 3.3 Navigation will be available for the N97.

I have been using Ovi Maps 3.3 on my N97 for a number of months now on beta.

Ovi Maps with FREE navigation will be available after the next firmware upgrade.

From the AAS article here:-

http://mobile.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/11010_Nokias_Ovi_Maps_navigation_goe.php

"Further devices will follow over the next few weeks and months, following testing and customisation. (In particular, the Nokia N97 isn't supported because the Maps 3.3 installer needs (in the order of) 20MB free disk space on C: and this would present problems for many users - a workaround is apparently coming in a week or so, possibly in the form of building Maps 3.3 into the firmware itself, eliminating the need for a separate download)"

It would appear that a new firmware release for the N97 will be available soon then with built-in Ovi Maps which is preferable to an add-on of around 9MB.

Update.
Ovi Maps will not only include free navigation and traffic information (a game changer from Nokia) but also Lifecasting. See here:-

http://mobile.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/11012_Lifecasting_opens_up_the_geo-l.php

Get it now for the N97. See here:-

New info: on twitter Steve reckons it could be delayed for N97 to form part of V2.1 firmware update.

Makes a lot of sense (it bloody better 😊 ) as it would probably overload the C: as a stand alone software update.

May alsio explain where the V2.1 disappeared to - maybe not so much/just bugs but being held back to incorporate this.

Well let's hope so (fingers X'd)

I can have some good laughs with you and your crusade, SnoFlake. But, really, you're taking it beyond the limit this time.

Perhaps a tad too eager to criticise the N97.

Although this is awesome news. If it does require a firmware update that mean that my network provider, 3 grrrrrrrrr, are going to spend ages getting it out. So I'm not expecting it for about 6 months.

Rubbish.

One of the penalties of an operator subsidised handset I'm afraid.

Along with all the mucking about of the Nokia firmware, adding/deleting prog's, you have to wait for them to OK it for Nokia release.

The other option is to debrand it and risk voiding your warranty.

I would start petitioning your operator now!

completely agree Horace78, the 3 network are rubbish 😊

As a tester of the 3.3 beta on the N97, I don't have very high expectations for this being better than the previous versions.

I have identified and turned in MANY faults to the Nokia Pilots website, but have received no acknowledgements that they are even working on them.

The major annoyance is the perpetual "lagging" behind your actual position so bad that navigational instructions come after the place you should have turned.

Major differences betweeen displayed distances and voice navigation distances make me think that there is something really, really wrong in the navigational portion.

I never got around to buying an external BT GPS dongle to test whether the problem was the N97's GPS hardware or the software.

@All

Fair Cop !

I did try to stick my hand up and correct info asap ([email protected] beat me to it) I was going off the initial info I had read but still I stand fully corrected.

By rights shouldn't have to be in a Firmware but the positive is sounds like we are going to get v2.1. (Not sure if stated already but dailymobile saying from Jan28th)

@GJW it's not a crusade against the N97 it's a crusade to get the handset promised in a fit state, to be honest we have no particular right to expect Ovi Mpas 3.3 (it would stick out a bit compared to it being on mini and 5800) but do have a right to a fully stable phone which I sincerely hope I will get in v2.1 as I'm as bored of me harping on as you clearly are.

January is the release date, my bad. Got from a Twitter feed this morning.

Apparently this is also the release date for the new Ovi maps. as N97 doesn't have enough C to make it workable, they have to do something to the firmware to fix it, hence a new firmware.

So, not necessarily the release date for a firmware upgrade on the N97 but rather the Ovi Maps release then for other handsets?

Chinese whispers or 2+2 = 5 possibly?

Update:
As snoFLAKE mentioned, Daily Mobile are mooting the 28th Jan also as the firmware release date. We shall wait and see.

Maybe, but if all devices get Ovi Maps and navigation today, why not the N97. Its because it won't work on it because of shoddy programming. So either they have to release a separate version for N97 or do something to the firmware as well.

Still, whatever if anything that happens on the 28th Jan, we get new stuff! 😊

More on Jan 28th

Probably just me, but are you saying that there will be a FW update on 28th Jan 2010 that needs to be installed before OVI MAps 3.03 will become available? Is the runoured v21FW for the N97 by any chance?

Also just to clarify are we saying that the release on 28th Jan will be the free services version or the standard version for teh N97?

Hi mbrett,

There will be a firmware update available for the N97 on the 28th which will make available through the Software Update Maps 3.03 (the Free Version). I confess that i dont know if this is the v21 fw however.

And

Ovi Maps 3.03 (with Free Navigation) for the N97

I've got it on my N97 today!

Not shoddy programming stringent but rather a shortage of space on C: drive for the installation, it requires 20+MB of space to install but once installed it only uses 9MB of C: drive.

IMHO I would rather that the new Ovi Maps 3.3 were included in a firmware update that replaces the current Maps prog on the Z: drive rather than using space on C: which is what the other handsets are having to do.

I must say that Ovi Maps 3.3 is fast and slick with a much better UI.

I posted that in a grumpy mood this morning so was just taking it out on anything. Nice work on the 3.3 Ovi workaround. Not going to try it till it's official for the phone.

Seems to me Nokia forgot about the N97 when doing 3.3 as it installs on all the phones without a tweak. Knowing there are memory issues and low space they still proceeded with it and again us N97 users have to wait. That's my shoddy programming reference. Should be optimised for all phones on a similar platform. Or perhaps the hamster who is producing N97 updates has chewed his way out the ball and they couldn't find him in time to release both simultainously so all Nokia users get the update at once.

I hope it fixes GPS issues anyway. Mine hasn't been as problematic as some but it's still buggy.

Actually it's quite the reverse stringent. It's the owners of Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic and Nokia X6 who will be losing out as they are having to install Ovi Maps as an add-on in their C: drive whilst we N97 owners wll get it intergrated in new firmware, starting next week.

I would hazard a guess that Nokia reasoned that, with the restricted C: memory, it would be preferable to release it in a firmware update.

IMHO this was the right descision by Nokia for once. My "work around" was really for those with operator branded phones who may have to wait for their operators to OK it but may wish to use free navigation in the meantime. So really, the best of both worlds! 😊

jerm wrote:i had 37MB free so i decided to try it

installed and now have 24MB free. ouch!

Ouch, indeed.

The Ovi Maps prog is only 9MB. Have you installed any other files, like voice navigation, to your C: drive?

[email protected] wrote:I would hazard a guess that Nokia reasoned that, with the restricted C: memory, it would be preferable to release it in a firmware update.

I'd imagine that those of us who installed the Ovi Maps beta would save another 7Mb on C: when we update to this firmware.

I'm with you..who cares about this free nav stuff. I mean, when does one actually use turn by turn? When out of town? How often does that happen? If I need turn by turn I'll pay the $65 or so

I for one will use it! Quite frequently infact. I just did a software update on my mini and it works perfectly, other than being a few meters out, which even my in-car sat nav is. I know you'll all be saying why would I need it on my phone? Well, I drive different cars quite often, and not always with sat nav, so for me, this is a real bonus. I'll now delete the Garmin app I installed, which in my opinion, is not as easy to use as maps.

If you have too much spare cash that you will turn down something rare in this life - something FREE - then send some cash my way. 😮

I'm definitely interested. Granted, I've got a TomTom in my car at the moment, but I haven't updated the maps on it in a year so it's sometimes baffled when I get to a new-ish junction. A windscreen holder and a cigarette lighter charger and I'm good to go with my N97.

Furthermore, I often go to see clients in both the sticks and in major cities. The turn-by-turn walking navigation for these situations has been a godsend!
