Nokia Software Updater says No Software Updates Available for my N97

I am trying to update the firmware of my N97 but Nokia Software Updater (NSU) says "No Software Updates Available" for my N97. I have the latest version of NSU (v1.8.10en) which I downloaded from http://www.nokia.co.uk/support/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-update

I have tried updating the device from Ovi Suite (2.0.2.42) Tools > Software Updates, it detect the device and its existing firmware fine; but says "No updates available" and also tried updating from within the phone; but its also says no updates available.

Is there any way that I can download the firmware and install it directly? (Ftp download; using some firmware uploader utility) I am Computer Software Engg by profession; and it will be no issue for me going this way! I am ready to loose any language pack etc; I just need the latest "English" firmware!

At the back of battery the code of the set is 0575400FQ21c;

I am intending to use this set here in Pakistan.

As Ian mentioned, essentially, it's the product code which will determine when / if any new software will be available for your N97. I'm in Saudi, my Product Code is different to yours. For me, version 2.0 was available around two weeks after it's major release.

Product codes vary and depend on country and if your phone is branded to any particular network.

alo alo

if your phone is unbranded (not tied to operator) pop over to the nearest NCC to get it flashed.

Nokia Customer Care guys at Pakistan / Faisalabad (my current location) and Pakistan / Lahore (a nearby larger city) plainly refused to update the firmware. I felt really bad about their attitude 😡

I had been long time Nokia user; but now seriously thinking to switch to some other platform! Android or may be Windows Mobile

The product code of your N97 you say is 0575400.

This is the N97, RM-507_NAM_NAM black model.

NAM = North American

Could this be reason?

Yes; they said the same; that "we can only service RM-505"

Now every time I need to update device' firmware; I have to travel back from where I purchased this device? Utterly non-sense...

Are you able to make and receive calls on your handset at the moment?

Yes; its working perfectly fine; I have been using it with local service since the day I landed here in Pakistan! I can make and receive calls; SMS, GPRS, MMS all working; all the sensors are working (Google Maps using the A-GPS)...Nokia PC Suite; Ovi Suite all connect fine...Have installed few new games from Ovi and apps like GMail, Windows Messenger; all working!!!

Its just that I need the new Kinetic Firmware, as my N97 looks like 80s against IPhone, Xperia and other similar devices!

khuziz, I have the same product as you and also can't update. Apparently v20 was pulled a while ago for us, not really sure why. Only thing we can do is wait until next week and hope v21 will be available.

I've not debranded, but if it got to this stage and I still didn't have version 20, I'd probably take the plunge.

In terms of re-branding - what would be the best product code to use?

I ask this, as it seems a little inconsistent as to which Product codes get immediate access to the latest FW releases. I bought un branded sim free handset, which I tought wou give me that instant access, but still had to wait two weeks after the release of v20 to get it.

I'm amazed that North American product codes still do not get it - are these branded phones? Perhaps the generic Euro codes might be better as a product code.

THere was post some time listing ALL the N97 product codes, but despite a couple of suggestions, it was never made into a Sticky, so a Search will be required.

Also it would have to be debranded to another RM-507 version and this is where it gets tricky with product codes that you can change to within the limited, about 8 models, RM-507 range as these have various hardware changes, i.e. different 3G frequencies, etc..

See here:-

For a list of RM-507 product codes see here:-

This would possibly explain the problem with the Nokia Service Centre and the slow. or lack of, updates.

not sure if the firmware caters that much for 3g frequencies saw a post on nokia forums that suggested that the firmware is able to self adjust to different frequencies (so they work when you go abroad) couldnt find it on a quick search but it was there - in a post about why there are so many different versions of firmware around the world.

I think that unless you are not very patient and you can afford to get a new smartphone (due to accidental bricking or unexpected fit of rage aimed at your phone(quite possible)) then debranding is the way to go. I did it to a euro code and had no problems - just remember debranding voids the warranty - although it sounds like you would have warranty trouble anyway

So far so good; all the stuff is working (Calls, SMS, GPRS etc with local telco). I choosed this way as local Nokia Customer Care guys were in no mood to support me

Thanks all for the guidance!

Congratulations, happy for you that you have at last got your hands on v20. Hope all goes well with the phone.

glad that it went ok

I still think that it is pretty rubbish that you have to resort to debranding to get latest firmware updates.

Lets face it you buy a 500 phone you should have access to firmware updates and the extra features, in particular the stability and bug fixes that they generally bring within a reasonable time frame of release. I would say 2 weeks is soomewhere reasonable for a global release.

Operator branded firmware will never go away - and the vast number of consumers are probably unaware and uninterested in even updating the firmware - but if you do want to you should'nt have to worry about the warranty being affected.

After all the big phone firms basically buy a job lot of them and strong arm Nokia to hack their own firmware and put crap on it that blocks features or introduces instability. By debranding you make the phone less likely to return to Nokia for "repair"

just reread the above and have realised i am in rambling rant mode! Sorry!
