From Apple iPhone to Nokia N97 mini?

18 replies · 8,812 views · Started 24 January 2010

Guest author Matt Radford (of All About iPhone) borrowed my Nokia N97 mini for a few weeks recently. His aim? To see if he could switch to it from his beloved Apple iPhone. Matt was a hardened Symbian user in times past with a love of the S60 2nd Edition-powered Nokia N70, so this was an especially interesting experiment.

Read on in the full article.

I'm surprised that the home screen was left out, because that's a big thing the N97 (mini) has going for itself.

RE: Touchnote.

I have just checked and I am amazed to see that Touchnote is available for my N85, but not for the N97mini...

Wow! I was sure you must of made a mistake with that one, for I have been using ot for a while now!

...Anyway, that was a great read, and I will be pointing out your comments on the "phone" aspect to a few iPhone users that I know!

Thanks. 😊

re: Google Calendar syncing. I found the best way to do this with iCal was to subscribe to each Calendar I wanted to sync as a separate Google account in iCal. Not pretty but it then let me sync everything to the phone.

I recently got myself an iTouch and I basically stopped using my s60v3 for most of my daily phone activities ( browsing, Twitter, Skype, email, rss). I still use it as a phone (calling) and a wifi hotspot ( joikuspot). I'm losing my faith in Symbian. I typed this message on my iTouch.

I signed up from a phone - I always do and get annoyed when I'm forced onto a computer. I bought a smart phone so I don't have to use a computer.

@brrip
Today screen is a big thing missing from the iPhone, but mine's jailbroken and has LockInfo installed, which does everything I need. This doesn't help regular users I know, but I can cope with a little hacking 😊

@Insane Reindeer
I contacted the Touchnote peeps about the lack of a 5th Ed. touchscreen-lovin' app, and you'll be pleased to hear there's a version on the way.

@JayTay
Funny, because my iCal is set up just like that. Despite quite a few tries, the calendar would not sync. So I've no idea if they've fixed the "All Day Event in iCal" becomes "00:00-23:59 event in S60 Calendar" bug yet.

@davidmaxwaterma
I didn't even think of signing up via a computer to be honest! I can sign up for a new iTunes account on my iPhone now, so I expected it to be that straightforward. Unfortunately, Ovi had a few more hurdles. After sign-up, it worked very well I thought.

So Nokia still doesn't include Conversation (threaded SMS reader) as part of the firmware? I use it on my N85. It's been around a while.

For To Dos you have now Evernote for 5th. Roadsync also works great for Google Sync, the problem is the $50 it costs is a robbery for a phone application (hey, also for a pc application).

I really dont understand gReader, I tried it on N95, E71, E72 and my N97 mini and found it so horrible, I never reach the point where the app sync with my Google Reader account, I dont know if I am doing something wrong or or what.

@CanadiaEh,

There is not such thing as an iTouch. It is an iPod Touch. Look at the box. It says the name.

@Brrip,

The problem is that Apple is not allowing access to the required API's or the SDK does not allow it. I too am using LockInfo which seems to work for the most part. It can be a bit twitchy but for the most part it works.

Just to say, zooming is easily done by a double tap, but that said, if you didn't find it, then usability could perhaps be improved (although stretch to zoom is about the same level of obviousness imo)

Hmm, all the all day events from Google Calendar are showing as all day events in Calendar on my N97 Mini.

i get where you guys are coming from, i did that when i had an iphone too, but still the n97 homescreen is a plus not just for all the notifications, but plugins from a lot of apps. it's a great feature to have, out of the box.

Don't S60 users like being productive?

Yes, I do. That's why I use a pen and paper (a small pocket notebook or sticky notes) for writing and reviewing my daily tasks.

I haven't bothered with a digital device for Tasks since I stopped using my Psion. Even on a Palm pen and paper was more efficient.

Less time entering notes means more time for real productivity.

I stopped using Nokia devices as soon as I could get out of my N95 contract, but I just love coming back to this website, its sooooo geeky.

Symbian is absolute rubbish in the post iPhone era, but you guys havent woken up to the fact that its doomed yet. I even prefer WM 6.1, even before someone like HTC makes it fun.

Lets face is, Symbian is destined for low end devices in the future, and if Nokia dont sort things out they are heading south.

I would say Nokia are dooooooooooomed, but maybe not. Everyone had written off Motorola yet they are suddenly producing some very tasty Android handsets.....

.....I just hope Nokia learns quickly before 'emerging markets' become the only place where they're influential.
