Rseven (beta) - online mobile backup/sync

2 replies · 3,181 views · Started 28 January 2010

David Gilson and Panashe Ngwerume review the new Rseven online sync and backup service, uncovering a number of browser compatibility issues that the developers need to address. They find the beta-status Rseven understandably immature from a functionality standpoint, requiring more development in order to deliver its aims and ambitions in a modern multi-platform environment, but Panashe in particular calls the service a 'gem', implying that there's great potential here for the future.

Read on in the full article.

Dear Steve, David & Panashe

Thanks for reviewing Rseven and providing valuable feedback on things that can be improved on the service.

Regarding some of the points raised by David;

1. The bug in Calendar event editing have been fixed, thanks.

2. Rseven syncs the contact & calendar between the phones & website. Any changes made on one side will be reflected in the other. For deletion, Rseven will only make the change one way, i.e. a deletion on the website will delete the contact/calendar on the phone not vice versa. This is to avoid contact data being lost due to accidental deletion on the phone.

When you deleted all your contact on the phone, Rseven will not do anything. If you formatted the phone or install Rseven in a new phone & login to Rseven using the same account, then it will download all the contact.

The Mark for Download feature is meant to force download the contact even though no changes have been made. This is useful in the case of the user wishing to restore some/all contacts deleted on the phone.

You also raised a good point about having a tool for dealing with duplicates in the Contact Manager, its a feature that we can add.

3. The call recording feature is not related to the audio search path. The audio path is meant for back up of audio files. The call recording can be played back in the Call Log tab in the Rseven app, in case you want to review it before backing up.

On the website, because we use the AMR format for recording the calls, the only player that can playback the files are Quicktime & Nokia Media Player which is not available on Linux. However we do plan to convert the AMR files to Flash in the future for maximum compatibility, it's in our to do list.

4. The text messages can be viewed in a threaded view using the Conversation tab on the website.

Regarding some of the points raised by Panashe;

1. We limit the upload to 300 items at a time due to limited memory available especially in the older 3rd edition phones. Some of our test users also complained that the initial sync session takes too long, this is because they have 2000+ SMS in their phone, so we decided to do the sync at maximum of 300 items at a time.

I'm actually very glad to receive your feedback in the review, the decisions we make on the features of Rseven are based on the requests & comment of our users. Again thank you very much.

Regards
