gE's Memory Trick for Transferring Large ROMS for GoBoy

38 replies · 40,674 views · Started 18 March 2003

you are the greatest. FINALLY a solution to this problem. =))))

How can i play roms that are bigger than 1mb? I m trying to play GTA2 2mb (zipped ~600kb) and it doesnt work. I always get the same error:
ANd its not only with gta. its also with other roms that are bigger than 1mb. 😞

any clues how to play those?

Can't run ROMs over 1 MB either. Probably has to do with the measly 4 MB internal memory.

am i the only one who finds that when you save games (like zelda) and then when you start the game again, you have to start all over again as the saved game is lost? Is there an updated version of goboy?

Dont use the save feature of the game, save using the goboy menu.

hallo ihr fixa alter kan einer von euch mir sagen wo ich gta fr goboy finde alter ich habe nemlich noka n-gage und den goboy alter und ich suche fr goboy gta

For those people who've tried to send (via IR) the Gameboy Roms (I've had problems sending the 1,024kb+ roms) to the phone only to get a General Error that the memory was full and to close applications and then try again later.. This little stunt fixes this problem. Its also for those of us who can't afford the zip program.

NB: All stuff here is freeware (except the Roms).

Requirements
*GoBoy (from http://www.wildpalm.co.uk/GoBoy7650.html)
*IR port/Bluetooth port (you need to be able to send data)
*Windows 2000/XP (or whichever ones support IR file sending/Bluetooth file sending)
*Nokia Data Suite for 3650 (from http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,5184,5341,00.html) - or the 7650 one if you have 7650 presumably (i haven't tried 7650 yet)
*FExplorer (from http://www.gosymbian.com/)
*Enough memory to boot~ (an MMC is good.. sorry but this ain't free either)

Method (please read through whole thing before doing it)
First get the ROM, for example "Zelda.gb" (don't ask me why but its an example). Say its 1,024 kb (or 1meg). What you do is use Nokia Data Suite to transfer the rom file (large one) to anywhere on the phone; preferably root.
Then using Windows IR/Bluetooth, send a smaller rom (or a small file) which has being renamed to the filename you want (or something similar) like "Zelda4.gb". You can rename a text file to that if you want (anything'll do). Just send it and make sure its saved okay. Move it to a folder you wish or whatever.
.. Now if you haven't already done so, install the File Manager (FExplorer) and then go to the drive where you stored the small rom/your SMS's (C: for normal phone memory, or E: for MMC) and then press the Left Menu Button (the one directly below screen) and scroll to File, and then scroll right and down to Find. Type in the name of the small rom (this is why its important to name it 'similarly' but not the same) and then when it comes up, click Options again and go File and then Properties. MAKE NOTE OF WHERE THE FILE IS (it'll be something like *:\System\Mail\00000000). Then what you have to do is navigate to the root of the drive (or wherever you put the BIG rom) and Press Options, Edit, CUT.. and then move to the directory you took note of above and put Options, Edit, PASTE. Viola! Your nearly there.
.. Now the trickyish bit. Rename the small file to something with ".old" so for example; our "Zelda.gb" becomes "Zelda.gb.old". And then with your new file "Zelda4.gb", you have to rename that to "Zelda.gb" (so it effectively replaces the old one). Then you can (if you want) delete the .old file (the fake one).
.. Now go into the Messages App; look in your inbox. You should see something from "Infrared Device" (or Bluetooth if thats how you sent it).. open it. It'll run straight away (woohoo!) assuming u installed GoBoy already. I move all my gameboy roms to a folder in "my Folders" called "Gameboy" (clever name isn't it?).. helps organise me better. I wish GoBoy supported running from C:\ or E:\ though.. would make things alot easier.

I hope this helps.
I'm open to any comments/suggestions. Sorry for bad instructions but I'm sure even the most illiterate can understand it.. but who knows? My english is pretty crap.

Wow, what cool info!!

Thanks alot I really appreciate that. Anway, if you could PM me some more info along these lines that would be great.

Anyway,

Have a good day!!

This clock projects the time, date, or temp on the wall or ceiling some people call
it a ceiling clock but I call it a digital projection clock. I got the black one because at the time that was the only color
they had. But now they have them in black and also in white.
