New GPS fitted at last!

Well, I finally got my new GPS fitted by my local Nokia Care Centre this morning. Understandably, they had had a long queue! And I'm happy to report the accuracy has greatly improved 😊

I actually saw the part they fitted and it appears that they simply replace the GPS & Camera Lens as it all sits on one unit, even though my camera lens was unharmed, at least I know now it never will 😉

I will give Maps 3.3 a proper work out tomorrow but all is boding well. All that remains is for a new firmware to address some other niggles and I might just be able to conceive of sticking with the N97 for the remainder of my contract.

Oh, and the real bonus was that they never even quibbled the product code that I had changed 😉 A completely free, under warranty repair.

is your n97 the one with new hardware? eg the camera slider has the blue color bottom? if so how much has accuracy improved? bloody NCC over here doesn't even KNOW of any kind of gps fixes, even if it was made official by nokia!

is there any OFFICIAL communication about the GPS issue?

I just meant, did they only look at the hardware, or did they look at the software too. As if they only looked at the hardware, they wouldn't have discovered your changed product code anyway. Just wondering how they operate!

My N97 that I received on launch day, and which has not had the lens or GPS modification by Nokia, has a blue lens cover bottom!

This covers the lens scratching issue and an official statement from Nokia on the subject:-

Jerm

when i had my n97 repaired the nokia care point issued me with a copy of the paperwork that described the repair required

these were basically service bulletin numbers sb 17 camera lens scratch issue and sb 19 gps issue

this was a Uk care point in Luton

these may be different service bulletin numbers in different regions

they sent me a replacement phone which works a whole lot better - not perfect on the gps front though.

I must get round to contacting my nearest place of repair (Ashford, Kent) to get the GPS fix. I do seem to have erratic results with positioning on my N97.

I deliberately don't use the camera in case I scratch the lense, so hopefully they can do that at the same time.

Has anyone her any experience with the Ashford Nokia care point?

Well, my original had the lens slide with the blue underside so I never suffered from the lens issue, but the GPS was all over the place.

Since having the new antenna fitted, the accuracy is now down into single digits, lock is achieved in 15-20 seconds and it's spot on from there on in.

It's definitely a known issue. My NCC had done LOADS of these repairs, all under warranty. I'm sure that somewhere in the AAS news section is some reference to the official announcement. Might be wrong though.

When I arrived, the lady at the front desk took my phone and plugged it into the USB port on her PC and she took down a bunch of details and logged it onto their system. I'm assuming that this gives them the serial/IMEI number and more than likely the product code and any other info. I'm sure they will be running some NCC specific software. I was given a barcoded printout with all my details on, inc. IMEI so I think it's safe to assume that any NCC will do the same.

I'm guessing that this particular NCC didn't care or didn't bother checking. I've heard some do though. Quite why it would be an issue is beyond me as this is a hardware fault and a known one at that. However, technically and legally they are within their rights to not do anything under warranty if you have breached it.

The replacement part contains the new antenna and a new lens & cover all in one. If you look at the back of the N97, there are about 5 screws around the edge. They undo these and a piece that is the same size as the phone lifts out and they just swap it over. One part, quick as you like.

i'm afraid the receipt i received only referenced them (the service bulletin number and titles) it didn't describe the issues or repairs in detail

sorry!
