I have been a lurker here at AAS for quite some time now and i thought it was about time i posted, and what better way to post than with good news.
The n97 2.1 firmware for the n97 is now live and ready for download via NSU, not sure about OTA.
The update is 133.7 meg in total.
edit: My Phone is an RM-505 N97-1 0576208
(Australian white)
edit:
I've updated my phone and given it a little play so here is a run down of first impressions.
The first thing I saw was that my phone booted up with an extra 5meg of free ram, 55meg on boot, 60 after closing the boot up programs (contacts messaging etc)
Menus scroll faster, they have raised that speed cap, It is definatly feels nicer to scroll through main menus. However the popup menus still feel a little clunky while scrolling.
I also haven't noticed them hang mid scroll (yet) like they some times do.
As a whole programs seem to open faster, i havent seen more than a second of white screen before programs open as compared to seeing 5 to 10 seconds of it at times in the past. This could easily just be because i haven't used my phone enough yet.
I've been opening and closing programs seeing how the ram goes and it's not looking that great. After initialy opening some apps (maps, music and web) then closing them i found my self down to 48meg ram with everything closed. I just lost another 2meg after opening and closing fring. To really know for sure ill have to run the phone over a day and see how I go, but, at a glance, it seems there are still some issues with memory recovery.
Hi! 😊 Welcome.
Are you going to install it today? Let us know what you think if you do.
Cheers :icon14:
Not OTA.
I wonder what those 'new fantastic features' are.
I haven't got NSU installed on this laptop, but checked online on Nokia's website, and according to my Product Code, I can get v12. Wow.
I'm already on v20.....:banghead:
Thank you,

I've just checked and there isn't an update for mine yet (UK unbranded Black model).
I'll keep trying during the day.
Just upgraded. Had a little over 18MB free on C thats with the new Ovi Maps and Nokia Messaging 10 installed. I now have 20MB free.
Wondering if I should do a reset as well?
BTW mines a EURO1 code.
Just checked NSU, v21 not available for UK unbranded, product code 0585162. Anyone else had any luck with this code?

Same here based on the product code only V12 is available but I have V20.

Ah, double checked again just now, and according to the online checker, I can get v21.
BUT - it's never as easy as that is it? Went to download NSU and according to that page, the latest version for N97 is v20. 🙄
And there's more. Using a work laptop, which is crippled due to all the security fears meaning I can't download any programmes, can't install anything, and the USB ports are disabled, will only work with work issued USB flash memory which are encrypted.
So, no NSU downloads for me!
But got another WIn XP machine at home, so will try that when I'm back on Thursday. Wonder if the new update will free up C Drive space which might in turn speed up some the Apps?

Usually, v21 will show up once you have updated to v20.
This happened on a 5800 i was updating for somebody, had to do the v30 update before the v40 would show up.

Still V12 for me. Will try NSU when I get home in a while, hopefully V21 is available. Hoping some of the issues like the default ring tone and better RAM management are in V21.
Using OVI suite, it detected and downloaded the update, but it wont install, says internal error and we cant find your phone...even though you did...cos you knew it was due an update! Grrr
Zyyb wrote:Using OVI suite, it detected and downloaded the update, but it wont install,
I used Ovi suite there's no update. However PC Suite detected the update. So I have just installed V21. First impression, a little faster not much space cleared on C. I am with 34.7MB. Will see what other improvements over the next few days. Hope there are no error messages like "System error, close some applications".
After a format, restore of contacts and installing Maps 3.3 and Nokia Messaging 10.1, I now have just over 30MB free.
I would strongly advise following these steps when upgrading to v21 to ensure a smooth, clean, trouble free, install.
Installation
1. Back up your data to memory card, using the tool in File manager on your N97.
2. Install v21 via Nokia Software Update on a Windows PC. Over-the-air updates to v21 will be available 'shortly'.
3. All your data *should* be maintained, but I'd strongly recommend doing a hard reset afterwards anyway, i.e. *#7370# from the homescreen dialler.
4. Restore your data (but not settings) from your memory card, again in File manager.
5. Set up any email/Internet/Bluetooth settings/pairings as needed.
What's new
The software contains many fixes and improvements on the earlier releases including:
* More free RAM after booting
* Improved call reliability
* Smooth touchscreen scrolling
* Browser improvements (among other changes, the toolbar stays out of the way more)
* Music player improvements
* Cleaner default (black) theme
* Improved image and video stability
Notes
* After a hard reset, there's now 53MB free on disk C:
* After removing the Facebook and AccuWeather homescreen widgets, the N97 now boots up with around 59MB of RAM free
* Disappointingly, Ovi Maps 3.3 (free) isn't in the firmware, though of course, it's an easy add-on from 'Software update' on the device, from maps.nokia.com or from the Ovi Store.
Taken from Steve Litchfield's excellent posting here:-

Ovi maps not included? Werid, I thought this was the reason why it wasn't relased for the N97 - that it would use up too much Cdrive if not part of the firmware!
The RSS feed auto update still resets everytime you restart the phone.
Yeah my ovi didn't work either, I had to download the Nokia Software Updater to get the update. Ovi maps seam to be a software update, mine keep failing for some reason. Good Times...

Ovi Maps wouldn't download through Sotware Update for me after the update and so I used this method described here:-

I had the same problem.
So I removed Nokia Maps (Settings-> Application Mgr) and then Ovi Maps appeared in the Software Updater.
Very straightforward, actually.😊

Not available for Turkish too. Still says v20 is the latest and phone is up-to-date. Don't know what they're trying to do. Is it so hard to release it once and for all?

Yes, it is!
See my posting here:-

starting with the paragraph... "Finally I come to the question of firmware releases".

Use the NSU, if you have not. I have already got V21 yesterday using NSU. But when I put my product code now it still states that V12 is the latest. Strange.
Cheers
i had mine show itself in software update, but hesitant to do it currently, if it means another hard reset and reinstalling programs and setting ringtones, and sms tones, and all my other personalised system tones....argh. i just dont trust a backup-format-restore method, and even if UDP is enabled, its still a hit and miss, else why ask to do the backups in the first place? ah, what joy.
about maps, i think it would make more sense to have it as a separate download since it's going to be updated regularly (hopefully) and having it in firmware will just add more used space when installing a newer version over it (likely) or b) having 2 OVI/Nokia Maps in your App Manager (some are pretty anal about that haha)

I was hoping that after installing the update i wouldn't have to do a hard reset - however the screen was flickering, videos weren't showing (screen went black after a few seconds) same was happening for music tracks - so i went with Ians suggestion of *#7370# :icon14: - fortunately only a few apps and contacts went missing, music/videos and photos stayed put, so all in all it took me about an hour to put the phone back to how i like it, settings taking me the longest time.
The only folder that i reloaded from "back up" was contacts, other missing items i loaded myself.
I've gained around 5mb c drive and roughy 10mb ram, yes the phone is a little faster and smoother but if i'm honest that's all i've noticed.
This is by no means me dismissing this update as pointless, it takes us further forward and i'm sure that others will notice more positive aspects to v2.1 than i have 😊
Still has the ringtone bug where my default ringtone changes to the factory ringtone occassionally.
I can't seem to update. I have v20 firmware on US version N97 (507). I have WinXP SP3 - installed to a clean HD 3 days ago. I loaded Ovi Suite 2 and Nokia PC Suite. All functions of both work fine, except for the updater. The updated detects my phone, downlaods the update, and then it says 15 minutes left for installation. At that point myu phone just restarts itself and I get a message about device recovery... I soft-reset it and tried again, but the phone just reboots itself right when the updating process is about to begin. I am out of ideas...
angiepea wrote:I was hoping that after installing the update i wouldn't have to do a hard reset
This time around I did not do a hard reset. With V21, I got a gain of 2MB of RAM upon booting up. It's now 59 MB. However there are some applications in the background mainly contacts, messaging, log & clock. If I close these using Handy Taskman a further 2MB of RAM can be gained. The RAM does progessively gets lower after some applications have been used. I wonder why.
There was no gain in drive C. I have 34MB. It was 42MB before installing the latest Maps, while still with v20. I wonder will there be any gain in drive C if I do a hard reset. I did run memory optimiser a very little gain, 0.3MB. The phone is generally a little faster. Hope it stays that way.
Cheers.
