after much discussion with myself at the mirror, i've decided to go for the update to v21.
backed up data from internal memory to be copied back later. gonna do a hard reset then format everything and bla bla bla to see whats resources like before updating to v21 and hard resetting after that too, to compare.
wish me luck later @ home!
good luck.
I upgraded to V21 on the day it came out. Tried via NSU but like the last time when I tried to upgrade to V20 I just got the message 'Update Startup Failed'. I don't know whether this is because I have a debranded N97 or not.
I went with my normal procedure of flashing via JAF. I did a full backup of my contacts, photos, videos, messages etc and took down a list of my installed apps. I then flashed using JAF, took about 3 minutes and was all done. Started up the phone, did a format on the mass memory and then *#7370#. Then restored my backed up data and re-installed the apps I had and I was all done. Took around 2 hours in total including setting back up all my profiles etc.
Main differences I have noticed are a much better response to touch when scrolling through menus. Browser seems a little better and renders pages a little quicker. The different in 'Theme 2' (the black one) is noticable. Not sure I totally like it but im sure i'll get used to it. The other main thing I have noticed, and I don't know whether it's psychological, BUT, if im connected to the network and have the 3.5g icon it is MUCH quicker to drop back to a GSM mast if I loose the other mast. Before it could take almost a minute or more to switch back.
Let us know how it goes.

Everything I've tried indicates that v20 is all that's available for my unlocked phone. Exactly what is JAF that you mentioned earlier?
Jeff
jaf = own flashing i think
memory management on v21 is the tits i tell you, awesome stuff
the rest, not much of a difference to me...looks like it broke roadsync 4.0 as i kept getting a corrupt error..

There's also now an up to date version of Phoenix (Nokia's engineer flash tool) available without need for dongles or cracks.

I found it via google on Rapidshare. Google for Nokia Phoenix 2009.34.14.40684
v21 is the first firmware update where I didn't have to do the hard reset to get it working afterwards.
Ive had problems after the update and did follow the instructions exactly.
I now get freezing.
Phone sometimes locks after a call has finished.
Can be difficult to make the phone drop the internet connection when finished surfing.

If you havent already done so, perform a Vulcan Death grip - and DONT restore a Nokia backup. See if the handset is more reliable after the VDG. 😉
Mine is perfectly stable on V21, as are many other AAS members. 😊
I have not done a vulcan death grip since the upgrade, but may well if the problems persist.
I restored everything except settings. I manually redid those.

either just dont restore anything...or just upgrade without backups...
i only restored my contacts and calendar, and reinstalled apps (a good time to get the apps updated anyway), so far the phone is running GREAT with everything loaded in (of course, C drive will always be a cloud overhead) and i'm having no real issues with it.
i did have a random reboot yesterday, but i think its one of those apps which cause it, gravity's latest, i think.
the memory management on v21 is nothing short of really awesome stuff. if you have no other reason to upgrade to v21, this is the reason you should!
i'm pretty happy with how things are with the 97 now, and i probably will be happy with the next few firmware updates too...unless i get that elusive n900 in my hands!

Your RM 553 codes indicates that you have an N97 mini, NAM version.
There is no v20 for the mini yet. The highest firmware release is v11 and I'm not sure, without the product code, if that is available yet for your model.
See here for checking for firmware availability:-

Hope this helps.
