N97mini predictive text nightmare

So, what's the deal?

When using the predictive text for messaging why on earth does the stupid software pick the last punctuation mark you used?

It's really, really, really annoying.

widehead wrote:Not really. I mean why change the system that's been in place FOREVER? It renders the phone virtually unusable when trying to send a text.

As I send between 50 and 100 texts per day you can imagine how annoying this change is.

I think one of us is missing something here!!!

If NSU does not offer you at least V20, this is because YOUR NETWORK has not approved anything above V11. This is nothing to do with Nokia, not their fault.

My issue has nothing whatsoever to do with any update. My issue is this: why have nokia chosen to change the way predictive text chooses punctuation marks in a way that is totally and utterly unhelpful? That is 100% Nokia's fault.

My 5800 handles punctuation just fine, so it's not a 5th edition thing. Every single Nokia phone I own (or have owned) handles punctuation perfectly.

The N97 mini is not worth a fraction of the asking price for many reasons - this is just one of them.

Seriously, if there are any AAS forum users out there who live in Manila send me a PM you can buy it off me for 5000 pesos.

The answer possibly lies in your last sentence... you use 2 "," in a row. 😃

I've also noticed how strange predictive text is on my N97, especially when it comes to punctuation. All my previous Nokia phones, with regards to predictive text, have all worked the same as each other, but for some reason this one's different.

I wonder if Nokia did this deliberately to force everyone to use the keyboard 😉

last time I checked the n97 mini version 11.0.45 is the equivalent of n97 21.0.045.

I think you have your models confused dez

yes i have noticed the mini has some weird predictive text issues like this. what is happening is the library is adding standard words to the custom dictionary with the punctuation at the end of the word. if you install that beta labs app linked above (by the way that app is simply AWESOME, wish we had this years ago), you will see regular words in the library with punctuation at the end. these words should not be getting placed into the library like this, but for some reason they are. this is causing the problem.

i use the beta labs app and go thru and edit the library, solves the issue. but this is just dumb luck that nokia just happened to released this dictionary app recently. if they had not done this, then we would be stuck with this bug with no way to fix our words.

Just been through my dictionary with a fine tooth comb and removed all the duplicated words with punctuation (mostly full stops), so this should stop the phone from misbehaving for a while - and at least I can fix it quickly if it should start building up a problem again.

Regards
Neil

When you talk about the dictionary, do you mean you're using the touchpad to type? I always use the QWERTY to text, and the dictionary on that is pointless.

We're all, I think, talking about "predictive" text and the new Nokia dictionary from Nokia Beta Labs that allows you to edit, delete and save words.

I think we must have our wires crossed. I was just asking whether the OP is using the predictive text via the touch screen or QWERTY typing for text messages. Just out of interest, since I wondered if any people use the touchpad to text (I always use the QWERTY).

it doesnt matter which one you use, they both save words to the same custom dictionary. and if you install that beta labs app, you can clean up that library. so it helps if you use the qwerty or the predictive t9. its good for all.

mind you with the full qwerty you need to have prediction enabled.
