Updated T-mobile N97 to V20.xx, now can't charge!

Hi,

On Friday I updated my original t-mobile N97 to version 20 - in preparation for a family weekend sightseeing.

All went ok, didn't have any problems....

..... until I tried to charge the phone.

I'd used the phone all day, updating email settings and some ssh activity.

The charge indicator light comes on, and the phone bleeps.... but after leaving it all night the phone wouldn't turn on.

I've tried numberous chargers and cables - but none of them work.

Luckily I have a spare battery, but that will only last so long before it also us flat!

Any ideas?

http://www.fixya.com/support/t3237873-n97_not_come_am_charging_phone suggest the phone is corrupt? Hope not.

Many thanks

Matthew

This, in part, sounds exactly like a problem I've had for some time since going to v20.

When I plug the phone into the charger at night, it SHOULD go into charging mode which sees the handset screen light up, the little light by the USB port come on and then the screen turning off.

However, I find that about 45-50% of the time it doesn't do this. The screen comes on but there is no charging lamp and the screen stays on with the NOKIA logo in it's usual place. No charging is taking place and I'm sure if left in this state, the NOKIA logo would eventually burn onto the screen. To remedy this, I unplug the charger and plug it back in again after the screen has turned off. This invariably sorts it and the phone goes into it's proper charge mode.

The second part of the problem comes when I turn the handset on. At a similar level of frequency to the charging issue, the phone will either turn on normally or the screen will illuminate and then just sit there. The only way to get out of this is to remove the battery and re-insert it and start again.

On one occasion, the phone would neither charge or turn on and it was only the Vulcan death grip reset manoeuvre that allowed me to get the phone back on. Naturally, I lost a lot of data doing that.

I'm pretty sure it has only started doing this since the v20 upgrade so I'm hoping v21, which I installed yesterday, will sort it.

I'll keep you posted 😊

You should probably consider a hard reset - including formatting both internal and mass memory - especially if you restored a Nokia backup after the firmware ugrade. You would be surprised what can go wrong with a Smartphone (software, not hardware) after a FW upgrade and a restore from a backup taken at the old FW version.

had this problem the first time when i got the phone, a full vulcan had to be done, no issues after that for the next few fw revisions

had a colleague encounter the same issue on a mini a day after purchasing it, after the vulcan, all is ok

Thanks for all the replies.

Silly question, but it is a monday morning!

How do I do a full reset if both batteries are now fully flat?

Thanks

Silly answer, you'd have to find someone with a charged battery and beg them to let you borrow it long enough to perform the VDG.

That was all I could think of!

Need to find someone who else who was brave enough to buy the N97!

Thanks

Or... you could pop into a local phone shop, explain your dilemma, and ask to borrow a battery from one of their display N97s so you can hard reset it there in the store. They might not mind helping out.
