Nokia X6 Firmware updated to v12

21 replies · 10,027 views · Started 08 February 2010

It’s been making it’s way around the various territories in the last few days, and now we’re happy to say that we have the updated firmware running on the Nokia X6 here at AAS (link to our review). The update to v12.0.091 can be installed (once available) either Over the Air or via the Nokia Software Updater on your PC. Even though your data should be preserved during the update, we would always recommend backing up any phone before an update is started.

Read on in the full article.

Any news on whats come in the update? I was keen on buying this for my wife, but she would have little patience with a buggy phone. Willing to wait a short while if the bugs get sorted out quickly...

[QUOTE="Ewan"]
I wonder if theyll take note of me asking for a change-log to be supplied?

I suspect if you are a lone voice then no, but if most updaters say the same thing then there is a chance.

I seriously don't comprehend Nokia's insistence on knee-capping their latest devices with low RAM and under powered processors. What's up with that? Somebody at that company needs a smack upside the head.

> I seriously don't comprehend Nokia's insistence on knee-capping their latest devices with low RAM and under powered processors. What's up with that? Somebody at that company needs a smack upside the head.

It's all very well people making this sort of comment, but how exactly do you define 'low ram' and 'under powered processors'? Ewan has just shown in his update that with the bug fixes the X6 performs very well on both these counts.

And I'm rather bored with seeing people do direct comparisons between Nokia devices and other maker's phones and then saying Nokia is underpowered etc. Rubbish. If Nokia was running the same OS and software, fair enough. It's not. It's running something FAR superior.

Yes, shock horror folks, Symbian really is MILES better and more efficient in all sorts of ways (not to mention far more stable and mature) than other competing smartphone OSes (and yes, I'm talking about anything you want to compare it to)

Even as a fan of Symbian and Nokia I have to agree with the criticism of underpowered hardware. I had a trial N97 Mini and it would have been a great device if it had a quicker processor. My S60v3 phone has a 600Mhz processor and it is so much quicker than the Mini. I find switching apps, starting apps and even found web browsing to be a more enjoyable experience on my S60v3 phone than with the Mini - despite the fact it has a smaller none-touch screen.

It doesn't matter if Symbian is a better or more efficient OS - the fact is the touchscreen Mini with higher resolution has a slower processor than my low resolution none-touchscreen S60v3 device.

Anyway looking forward to a batch of hopefully Cortex running Symbain^3 and 4 phones from Nokia this year.

Impressed by Ewen's first review and respect All About Symbian for being hard on Nokia where appropriate. And now respect for Nokia for fixes the bugs fast. It usually takes Nokia months not weeks for an up date to early bugs - looks like Nokia is really getting on its game - this year is going to be interesting...

Ewan you have my respect for giving it a bad review when the firmware was not up to scratch. AAS have in the past not reviewed devices because they waiting for "good" firmware to be released. Unfortunately bad firmware doesn't stop the phone manufacturers from releasing products!

N97 mini has an ARM 11 @ 434 MHz, iPhone 3G has an ARM 11 based processor @ 412 MHz + graphics MBX-Lite processor for less display pixels.

The iPhone spec was 2008. It's now 2010. Regardless of how efficient the OS is on RAM, it still takes the same amount of clock cycles to update a given amount of display memory, or decode an MP3, take a load of packets up the stack (oo-er!).

So, if the late 2009 N97 mini has half the processing power of the mid 2008 iPhone 3, it is underpowered by comparison.

Still works impressively well though, considering all that.

Ah, ah, ah.. has anybody started the Holy Church of Symbian without warning me??

Have we made contact with a parallel dimension where nokia phones can work with ovi maps without lag? where you can scroll in contacts lists without lag when the music player is in the background? Where you can start music player and sports tracker without the last hanging up?
Where you can browse with javascript activated on engadget without the browser closing because of low RAM.. and, god bless us, maybe you can even have a music player in the background? And you can play Divx videos on S60v5?

Then take me with you pleeeease!! I want it too!!

OK, lets try some of this stuff.....

No need to try this one. I use the SATNAV regularly, and I am looking out for it being accurate. I can see bridges on the screen over the arrow at the moment I pass them.

Yep, just tried this one and it scrolls contacts nicely, even kinetic and lovely. What's the problem?

ccrobopid wrote:

Yep, no problem. I do this often too when cycling.

I don't really understand why anyone would want to; but yes, that's working OK too.

Can't test this one, haven't got any DIVX videos.

It's just a modest 5800 with a 434 MHz ARM 11, and V40 firmware, but it all works fine. Can be had for a song on Ebay.

ccrobopid wrote:And you can play Divx videos on S60v5?

Yes you can... The Samsung Omnia HD (i8910) can play divx videos out of the box (AFAIK). Its just that Nokia did not include that codec on their phones. And even for Nokia phones, go and buy a software called Smart Movie. You will be able to play Divx files. On Symbian, on Nokia...
What are you blaming Symbian for???

V40 firmware? I've just checked with nokia and the last official firmware is v31. So until I see it I just don't believe you. Sorry

But seriously.. you really don't have any divx video? Aha, I was sure we made contact with a paralell universe!! ;-P

Yes, but we are talking about NOKIA phones, not samsungs. If nokia phones had the same processor and RAM than 8910 then we wouldn't be crying around 😊

As for Smart Movie.. go and download the demo version and see with your own eyes that you can't play half decently a 320x240 divx video. So, yes nowadays it really is not possible to play decently divx videos on nokia S60v5 phones.. I now it's shocking. I coulnd't believe it when I first bought my phone.. but after some weeks of trying everything I had to give up. :_(

V40.0.005 is the last offical firmware. You are very silly.

Unregistered wrote:V40.0.005 is the last offical firmware. You are very silly.

Yes, I'm very silly, but so is Nokia. Go and look here:

http://www.nokia.es/soporte/producto/5800xpressmusic

Translated from spanish:

"The most recent firmware version for nokia 5800 is V31.0.008*"

I have also checked OTA and it says I'm up to date. Could you, oh Non Silly One, please tell me which product code and region your mighty superior 5800 has?

V40 is the latest for the 5800. That introduced kinetic scrolling in the 5800. Must not be out for your product code yet.

Ok. You were right. There is a v40 firmware. Sorry for doubting it, but some time ago there were some made up screen captures of the new v40.

I've had to change product code to euro2 to be able to update.

However I'm checking it and I'm reinforced on my impression that the processor can barely handle the interface.

For example:

-I've activated the contacts bar theme with contacts and shortcuts on home screen and when I start the music player I can see that the slide speed of contacts on home screen is slower (!). Also, without the music player the if you scroll fast you can see it stuttering sometimes

- I also see that some times a slide motion is detected as a single click and the contact details opens instead of scrolling the bar. When I have the music player in the background it worsens and it's more likely to detect a single click, so it definitely seems s a CPU thing.

Also, OVI maps crawls after my inputs the same than with v31. It doesn't matter if SATNAV lags or not. It surely is a simpler program. The fact is that the official Nokia navigation software can be barely run in the 5800, n97, n97 mini, X6, etc. hardware.

And seriously, think about it.. trying to quiet the voices that cry for more powerful hardware goes against you as a consumer.. Or do you feel that you will be affected in a negative way if the 5800 should have the same processor that the 8910 uses?

Bye
