N97 screen has 'blinds' effect?

I'm posting this for a mate, has anyone come across a problem with the screen having lines across that look like vertical blinds? apparently he was texting when the phone froze completely, so had to pop the battery out, on restart he had the screen issue. We have hard reset the phone, reinstalled the firmware etc. and nothing seems to shift it.

When a program encounters a memory leak you'll sometimes see a psychodelic (don't get to use that word much anymore) display as you describe followed by an automatic reboot.

Generally, display function is restored on reboot.

If the problem persists, it sounds like a hardware problem.

You might try the VDG (Vulcan Death Grip) full hardware reset (copies a fresh copy of the firmware) first before taking it in for a warranty repair.

The lines are thin and black all the way down the screen just like blinds, 2 close together then a space etc. but the phone is still useable, death grip didn't sort it, it looks like this will be returned for repair.. I've told my mate to request the gps and lens fix aswell.

Ha, I just had that exact thing on Saturday! Was writing a message and the lines appeared, kept coming til the screen was almost all white then it faded back past the messaging screen to black. A reboot got it back up briefly and then it happened again - I managed to get brief bits of display by messing about a bit but eventually it fully died and just stayed black - hard reset did nothing.

I took it to the nearest service centre that day and they've sent it off to Nokia - said 7-10 days til I get it back so fingers crossed it'll get fixed or replaced.
