Hello
So I downloaded the new Ovi maps and was excited about all the new free features, but now I find that it can't find me. What I mean is that I open the program, choose "Go online", but when I try to "Find my position" it doesn't. It did the first time, but in the wrong place, which I understand can happen, but now that I'm out of the country, it still doesn't show where I am. It shows the first place it showed. Yes, I've downloaded the maps for my location.
Any advice/help/ideas?
Thanks!
Fred
Try a reset . Make a Backup first , in case of a hard reset or VDG ! See my post here :
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/81021/
After the reset start as soon as possible the Maps before anything else .
PS a hard reset will probably delete the new OVI maps , since it will be installed on C: (device memory) and bring back the Nokia Maps from the firmware . So soft reset will be the option to save OVI maps .

Hello
Thanks for the suggestion. I was hoping to avoid a reset, but there probably isn't any other way. I'll wait until I have a chance to do a backup and then try a soft reset.
I thought the problem might be some setting that I didn't set.
Thanks
Fred
A soft reset *#7780# doesn't wipe personal data (contacts , calendar , notes) from the phone . Normally it only changes your personal settings to factory settings ( equal to : Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Factory Settings ) .
So there might be some changes in Messaging settings , themes and some other .
In Menu > Memorycard you can make a Backup first and Restore after the soft Reset .
About Hard Reset : Contacts can be copied to memorycard : Contacts > Mark All > Copy to MC . When you had Messaging set to MC , also messages will survive .
Only the device doesn't have a Backup for Calendar items , strangely .

Hello again
I just tried a soft reset and the GPS still doesn't work.
Can you suggest anything else? I'd rather not to a hard reset!
Thanks
As I am not a user of OVI maps really , I cannot tell my own experience . So my remarks are general , nevertheless without hard reset :
1) did you connect using Assited GPS ? Menu > Settings > General > Position .
2) you could try re-install OVI maps once more (and right after installation starting it immediately) .
3) try Maps Booster , especially in a area surrounded by buildings :

Hello again
Thanks for the suggestion.
Sorry, but when you write
"As I am not a user of OVI maps really , I cannot tell my own experience . So my remarks are general , nevertheless without hard reset :
1) did you connect using Assited GPS ? Menu > Settings > General > Position ."
I'm not sure what exactly you mean. Do you mean in Ovi Maps? There isn't a Menu selection there.
Could you clarify?
Thanks!
Fred
Sorry when it wasn't clear . I was pointing at the devices Home/Menu button . Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Positioning > Methods >
1) Bluetooth GPS - for external BT dongle
2) Assited GPS - when enabled is giving a fast lock , by connecting to the serviceprovider's radio . Costs approx 4kB download via GSM/UMTS )
This is a quick help for the :
3) Integrated GPS - the actual device GPS .
4) Network based - I never tried this one .

Hello again
Thanks for the clarification. I checked those settings and all but Bluetooth GPS are checked. Still doesn't work.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Fred
Well, I was at the Nokia store in Chicago the other day and the people there were very helpful. They said that sometimes on models other than the ones the Ovi Maps upgrade was really intended for it takes a while to get the GPS signal the first time. They suggested that I try to connect, and check the satellite status in GPS data. If this didn't work, I'd need to downgrade to the old maps.
It didn't work so I'm going to try downgrading.
Just to have some closure on this:
As I mentioned in a reply above, I found that Ovi Maps can find the GPS signal and connect if I'm moving, even walking. It takes a few minutes, but it does connect.
