What�s the correct way to add contacts to get my N97 mini to recognize them. I have some contacts whose names get shown when they call, and others that only get shown by their phone number. I wonder if this might give me the explanation to my problems regarding personal ringtones not working, too.

Most likely, you have the same number(s) saved multiple times. When that happens, Nokia phones give up and do not try to guess who's actually calling, and just displays the number. Check both phone memory and SIM contacts for duplicates.
Note also that Nokia phones compare only the last 7 digits of a number (so if the numbers differ otherwise, but the last 7 digits happen to be the same, then the behaviour is as above).
