I have on my phone the latest versions of the built-in Nokia browser as well as Opera Mini, Opera 10 and Skyfire.
I decided to check the RAM usage for each of these browsers by just opening them and I was amazed at the results!
Scr000039 shows the phone in idle mode with the usual app's open and a RAM of 42.5MB.
Scr000040 shows the Nokia built-in browser open and a RAM of 38.9MB = RAM usage 3.6MB
Scr000041 is Opera Mini open and a RAM of 33.3MB = RAM usage 9.2MB
Scr000042 is Opera 10 open and a RAM of 29.2MB = RAM usage 13.3MB
Scr000042 is Skyfire open and a RAM of 15.1MB = RAM usage of 27.4MB
As can be seen from this, there is a considerable difference between the Nokia and Skyfire browsers with Skyfire using over 7.5 times more RAM than Nokia and there is only about 4MB difference between Opera Mini and Opera 10.
Personally I find the built-in Nokia browser serves most of my needs and works by default with Google voice.
Just be aware that if you are low on RAM overall that opening some of these browsers will cause closure of some other app's.
Err.. why not open a few webpages first before calculating the RAM? How can you benchmark without it actually performing other than loading it up?? :S

That thought did occur to me but what would be the point if just opening the browser uses X amount of RAM would it change the equation very much by opening a given web page?
No.. actually it is the best way to benchmark. Using the Nokia Browser, it might start with 4MB but blows up to 40MB depending on things loaded on the current (eg flash files) and previous pages. The same page on Opera Mini for example will not go beyond 15MB as thats the limit the browser have on the memory. Some browsers will grab as much memory as possible and use that as the limit for its web pages.
Its kind of like.. benchmarking a PC by installing and booting Windows.. without actually using any benchmark or load simulating applications?

OK... done the same test again and this time I opened this page on each browser and it does make a difference to the equation but not to the overall ranking as follows:-
Scr000044 shows RAM in idle mode at 42MB
Scr000045 shows Nokia browser at 32.3MB = RAM usage of 9.7MB
Scr000046 shows Opera Mini browser at 31.5MB = RAM usage of 10.5MB
Scr000047 shows Opera 10 browser at 17.3MB = RAM usage of 24.7MB
Scr000049 shows Skyfire browser at 12.8MB = RAM usage of 29.2MB
So, Skyfire uses 3 times more RAM than the Nokia browser and there is now, not a lot of difference between Nokia and Opera Mini.
Just as an aside, I notice that I can now set Opera Mobile as my default browser on the N97.
Menu > Settings > Phone > Application sett. > Default apps. > Browsing internet > Now offered Web or Opera Mobile.
Think I'll stick to Web!
On top of which, of course, some browsers use memory and aren't very good at giving it back when they're done. And then there's the inevitable memory leaks...

After going to google, searching for something and visiting the first 10 results
That'd give you more of an idea about session stability. But would be very tedious and I wouldn't recommend it...

You obviously missed my post in which I solved the lens scratching problem entirely.
In a nutshell... with the lens covered closed you just have to put a small amount of super glue around the lens cover edges and allow it to dry.
Simples!

Third, and final, attempt thanks to davecozens and bchliu.
I started by opening this posting on each browser and then Googled Gordon Brown and opened the first 10 items in results.
Here we go:-
Scr000050 shows RAM in idle mode at 42.2MB
Scr000051 shows Nokia browser at 26.9MB = RAM usage of 15.3MB
Scr000055 shows Opera Mini browser at 26.7MB = RAM usage of 15.5MB
Scr000053 shows Opera 10 browser at 14.2MB = RAM usage of 28MB
Scr000054 shows Skyfire browser at 11.3MB = RAM usage of 30.9MB
So, at the end of the day, both the Nokia built-in browser and the Opera Mini are virtually neck and neck and the best at RAM usage. They were also the quickest to load as well.
Both the Opera 10 and Skyfire use about twice as much RAM as the other two and were slower to use.
As you will note from the screenshots, both Opera 10 and Skyfire had actually already forced some of my app's to close!

In answer to your question, I don't have loads of app's running in the background eating up RAM and I choose my themes very carefully with RAM in mind.
For instance, I've never installed Mail for Exchange or Nokia Messaging or Ovi Contacts.

I just misread or when it came to reply forgot and added an extra 4mb lol
i havnt installed them either... Have nothing on my homescreen or only normally have one browser or game/app open at once lol....
In that case, install System Status or Handy Taskman and you can see how much RAM you are using. This is important to know as if you get a call on more RAM than is available the handset will close app's down/freeze/crash.
My other post, that's being moderated/scrutinised explains a bit more.
@BBB in JBakTaskman , an applicationmanager , you can set the display to read the different memories : see screenshot . And it is free :
