O2 Pay and go UK problem. n97 mini

Hey everyone. I'm new here, but this seems like a friendly place, so thought I'd try my luck here with this problem I'm having!!

ok so i bought a Nokia N97 White from ebay. The woman said it was locked to orange, so I assume she had it on contract with them.
When I got the phone, i popped my o2 pay and go sim card into it. I can now make and receive calls and texts, so I assumed the phone was unlocked. The internet however will not work, and o2 will not provide me with the settings. they say I need to purchase a simplicity sim contract before it will work. What's going on? Do i need to debrand the phone or something?

I'm also having a problem with the GPS. It can't locate me for some reason?

Thanks in advance, and if you need further info, please ask.

The person you spoke to at o2 is an idiot and probably just after some commission! Try going to http://getsettings.o2.co.uk/ServeSettingsWebApp/ to get the settings sent to your phone, this should work. Not sure about the GPS problem. Try giving it a few mins and go outside in view of the sky (can take up to 10 mins with mine)

hi guys, thanks for replying.

I've tried the settings thing on their website. I just get this message: "Unfortunately, we are not able to process your settings request at this time. Please contact Customer Service or your account manager to discuss further options."

But when I phone customer services, I get the same response! This is very weird!
I also can't get the settings via the sim services app on the phone.

furthermore, I've tried entering the settings manually, but it still refuses to connect!

How unkind of O2 not to help a paying customer!
However, there's another solution...

With your O2 SIM installed and active, send a text to shortcode 2020 containing the word ACTIVE in the SMS body.

You will then receive the settings via a SMS Service Message.
Save the settings and answer YES when prompted to make settings defaults.

Finally, I found that the MMS settings are still not defaulted to O2, so you need to go to Menu->Messaging->Settings->Multimedia and select the O2 MMS Prepay connection.

Hope this helps.

Not so! A GPS lock is obtained much more quickly using A-GPS over a data connection. However, unassisted GPS will obtain a lock within 2 to 20 minutes.

The best advice in this case is to place the N97 on a flat surface, with a clear view of the sky and MAPS launched, then not to touch the handset for 25 minutes.

My experience over the last few years with Nokia Internal GPS is that once you get a good positioning lock the first time (with a new handset, after formatting internal memory or running a FW upgrade), future (unassisted) GPS locks will happen within 2-3 minutes. Also, where possible, launch your GPS app whilst stationary, as unassisted GPS locks take longer when moving quickly e.g. driving).

Obviously, using A-GPS is preferable, if you don't mind the small data costs and if you have good reception at the start of your journey.

Sorry, yes you are right dez.

You do not need an internet connection to use the integrated GPS. Only the Assisted GPS, Wi-Fi Networking (on Ovi Maps 3.04) and Maps Booster if it is installed.

Another option to get your GPRS and MMS settings, if the text doesn't work, is to go to:

Menu -> Applications -> O2 (Icon that looks like a sim card with a red square beside it)

At the bottom of the list choose "Get Settings". This will retrieve the settings from o2.

I still agree with you that GPS with network connectivity is preferable tho. 😉
