Nokia E71 and E66 get Ovi Maps free navigation

Nokia today announced the availability of Ovi Maps 3.3 (3.03) for the Nokia E71 and E66. The updated version brings the free, worldwide pedestrian and car navigation edition of Ovi Maps to these devices. Nokia says the release is a result of listening to consumer feedback; 'you spoke, we listened' says the press release. The E71 and E66 version do not include the Lonely Planet guides due to technical constraints, but the core navigation offering is the same as that found on more recent devices.

...well I am only going to say one thing, if Nokia can release it for the E71/E66 then they could if they wanted to release it for all S60v3FP1 devices like the N95, N82 etc etc.
It proves there is no technical reason why they can't.

Why are Nokia not releasing free Maps for my Samsung Jet? If they don't give me Maps soon I'm going to sell the Samsung on Ebay and never buy a Samsung again.

Oh that's really great ... just one week after buying a new annual licence for my E71 (albeit at much reduced pricing) they go and make it free!

Thanks

I am a recent E71 owner. I am very glad Nokia has back ported this feature to E71. For the record, navigation was not issue for me, but I did and still do think that Nokia should make their policy clear. As I wrote earlier too, it is the lack of clarity which breeds discontent.

I did not think much of the complaining here and at other places, but apparently it helped. So to be fair, dear whiners I would like to thank you too!

BTW, does this mean owners of other FP1 models should start complaining a bit more vociferously?

This gives me hope that an E75 version isn't too far off...

Great, the E-3.1ers get the new maps, but the most successfull nokia smart phone ever, the N95(8GB) doesn't. well that can't be a technical descision. The E71-Application should run on the N95 out of the box. That's a "throw the old phone away an finally buy a new one" message. Understood nokia, but if the next one is a nokia gets more and more uncertain.

Just downloaded it. Seems to work well. Thank You Nokia.

A now even happier E71 User (for almost 2 years now, never used any device that long)

hurrah!

i have an e71 and just upgraded to N900..

now desperately waiting for maps update on N900..

I just read the announcement at the Nokia Conversations. They clearly state that these are the last s60 3.1 devices to get this update. However no word on support for the remaining FP2 devices.

has anybody else the problem, that the ovi maps 3.3 update isn't available for your n86?
i've an t-mobile-germany branded version, and i even don't have the v21 update....

I really don't see why the N95 variants etc. will not be supported. I don't expect there's much more work to get it running on an E71 than there is an N95.

Disappointed. MeeGo will probably be my next phone so I'm hoping they get that version up to feature parity soon.

The fact that the E66 and N82 both have Symbian 9.2, S60 3rd FP 1, and 240 X 320 screens shows it's a business rather than technical decision to prevent the N82 loading the E66 version (as I hvae just tried).

Anyone got any hacks to make E66 version work on N82?

Just great.
The "old" device E66 gets an update, but the newer N79 did not?
Sorry Nokia. Just another point for not using another Nokia as my next device. You made switching so easy for me.

Bye..

I have found a huuuuuge ignorant mistake in Ovi Maps 3.03 update! There is no way to search for an address!!! Yes there is the search bar but if you don't know the correct spelling of the address you're screwed! Before you only needed to know the 2 first letters and it would narrow your search down which you could scroll down and select, now that very important feature on any modern navigation system is a MUST and you just went ahead and removed that feature!!! Can Nokia ever get anything right? I said and will say again they are not a good at making software!

Does anyone have the same problem? I noticed the touch version has that same plague.

What about the 6210 Navigator? That's a 3.2 FP2 device with integrated compass, shouldn't that get the free version of Ovi Maps?

Brilliant. This gives my E71 a new lease of life.

To the moaners: the E66 version works on the N95 and N82.

Ha! I just purchased a year's license for my E71 about a month ago, but I'm not complaining! I'm just glad to have a stable version instead of digging through download sites to find the old beta that did support the E71.

Thank you Nokia! Very unnecessary, but very appreciated.

Unofficially the E66 downloand version apparently works on the N95s and N82. I also read that unofficially the 6210 Navi works with the download version of the 6720.. anyone have more concrete infos on it?

As far as I've understood, E90 is a Symbian 9.2, S60 3rd FP 1 device, so according to these news, it won't be getting any free updates to the newest version of Maps.

I've also seen some posts describing users left with somehow broken Maps application after doing an upgrade at some stage, feeling that they should have been informed/warned by Nokia that E90 is not supported, for whatever reason.

What would you suggest, what is the best way to upgrade Maps in E90? Is turn-by-turn pedestrian and car navigation even possible, free or by paying something?

I have the latest version suitable for my E90 installed, and I recently bought a navigation licence for 10 for my E90; definitely worth the money, even if you already have a dedicated sat-nav, as it's nice to know that you have access to navigation wherever you are...

I have posted my share of critique for things that I haven't liked... but there is just no pleasing you. Whatever Nokia does, you will whine and complain that it is not enough.

Those of us who purchased a N95 or an E71 for that matter never dreamed it would come with a free navigation. I do not understand where the sense of entitlement is coming from. If that which you have purchased is not working, you have a legitimate complaint. I fully understand those who wrote and complained about the problems with the maps once they had purchased the licence.. Hey, I am one of those.

As for the rest of you. I have no respect to ppl who are complaining not because they are not getting something, but because you are so goddamn envious of others who happen to get something you didn't.

So let me be the fisrt to say it: Hey, Thanks, Nokia for fixing the thing with my E71 so I no longer need to worry about tranferring the licenses every time I switch SIM. Plus, the search is a million times better now. Thanks.

Hi buster,

thanks for the info, good to know - I will do the same. 😊

May I ask what version did you purchase, and do you know what is missing, compared to the newer devices? The main thing I have been missing (currently) is the voice guidance while driving, hopefully that is covered in the paid version. And even if not, 10 is basically nothing. 😊

QFT.

Nokia can't win here. They will always be moaners.

Been using Ovi Maps 3.03 for some time now and I prefer the new search function.

Hmm, my E71 has successfully installed the new Ovi Maps application, but when transferring the UK maps to the storage medium, it always hangs on 13.1%. I've tried dumping all the map data and removing the Ovi Maps suite, but the Map Loader alwats hangs at the same point. Ovi Maps is now useless - anyone else seen this problem with their UK E71?
