Java Runtime update to v2.1

Java Runtime (JRT) for Symbian is a mobile runtime for Java™ applications. It is used when running Java based applications on your mobile device. For example if you download a Java game from Ovi Store, it is executed using Java Runtime.

The latest version, Java Runtime 2.1, is now available for S60 5th Edition devices as a Beta release. The JRT 2.1 Beta release replaces the earlier JRT 2.0 Beta release. The final JRT 2.1 release will be included in Nokia devices based on the Symbian^3 platform, and it will also be available for S60 5th Edition devices as an add-on.

JRT 2.1 Beta provides developers and end users early access to the latest mobile Java features including:

* Improved installation user experience
* Improved MIDlet start-up experience
* Improved security user experience

Installs on C: at 5MB and requires about 20MB of free space on C: at installation only.

First impressions are that in general the phone feels faster and that games in particular are quicker to load and run. Opera seems faster too.

I must say, that in the past I have installed previous versions and then after a few days end up uninstalling Java Runtime.

I will run it this time for awhile to see if it's worth the trade off with memory.

Java Runtime can be downloaded from Nokia beta labs here:-

I think Opera's the main Java app I use, so will be interesting to see the difference. Is the increase in Opera speed worth the loss in C: memory?

Only you can answer that one jamessmith01.

I was surprised at how many Java app's I had. Things like Candle, Zippo, Rotary Dialler, Spin the Bottle, all appear to work better.

Besides, if you don't like it you can always un-install it. 😊

Well, as with the previous two versions of Java Runtime, once again I've ended up uninstalling it.

I found that it was causing my phone to freeze and the home screen widgets, Accuweather, ComingNext and NewsBuzz to behave oddly and freeze.

I cannot justify the 5MB of C: drive and the RAM that it uses, plus the freezing problems, for what seemed very little gain, if any.

ditto. caused opera mini to crash on me many times, slow startup, no noticeable differences in java games...

got back my 5mb
