Interesting article Steve.
I agree that it is a concern re the number of pixels - but those example shots look fantastic. It's my opinion that digital image quality is dependent more on the technology and sensor size than on megapixels.
Either way, little will tempt me away from my Nikon F6 with my full 8.6 cm squared of Fuji Provia.
All in all the N8 looks like a really exciting phone.
it turns out that the Nokia N8 camera sensor stretches over roughly 1/1.9″, which is an impressive number on its own. Even if Nokia N8 was a dedicated digital camera, its sensor would still be considered large. Of course, image quality doesn’t boil down to sensor size exclusively but when you have almost twice the imaging area, chances are you will have more accurate data to process resulting in better dynamic range and lower noise levels.
Just to give you some perspective, I did the same math on some related cameraphones, so here they are:
- Sony Ericsson Satio – 1/2.5″
- Samsung Pixon12 – 1/2.5″
- Nokia N86 8MP – 1/2.5″
- Sony Ericsson Vivaz – 1/3.2″
From GSMArena. Anyways this looks quite impressive. One thing I would like to know is why Nokia abandoned lens cover? Was it by design, or they find it useless?
I hope in near future Damian will do comparison N82/N86/N8 - that would be interesting to see, especially as during his last N82 vs N86 shootout he persuaded us (or at least did his best) we don't really need Xenon, and that in fact LED is better for closer objects as you don't get reflection issue. Can't wait! 😊
N82 vs N86 low light shootout:

I don't get it, SL vilified the SE Satio for having a 12mp camera and is just loving a Nokia 12 mp camera.
Gsmarena did a calculation that suggest that the lens are 1/1.9, spectacular indeed, just google it.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the N8 fares though something tells me Samsung's flagship with 12mp is not too far away, and then Satio's successor may appear. If we do have those two competitors appear by Q3 then I am certain the N8 will come out last.
What are you talking about? The N86 still is a great camera phone and the best non-touch screen Nokia mobile phone out there right now. Fact!

Couldn't agree more! N86 delivers great images, the only downside for me is stiff/rigid camera button, resulting in blurry images. Once you find sweet spot, results are impressive.

Yet another person who clearly hasn't used Nokia's best handset.
My biggest gripe with the N8 is the fact that it's a touch UI. I still cannot believe people prefer touch screens over real keys. :con?
Imagine something the size of the current N86 8MP where the front panel is almost entirely a beautiful OLED screen, with a trackpad button at the bottom. A slider could reveal real, useful keys and we could dispense with all this touch nonsense.😃

Eh? The Satio's faults were mainly well away from its camera. And I'm not particularly praising the N8 for having 12mp. I'd rather have 8. Methinks you've been remembering what I've said rather wrong on all counts....
DamianDinning wrote:The sensor is the N8 is the largest ever in a mobile. It's 1/2 inch, bigger than many compact digital cameras. Each pixel is nearly 50% larger in surface area than broadly equivalent devices.
Can anyone provide a link where I can verify that it's sensor size is 1/2"? Seems too good to be true.

He's the guy working for Nokia. I'm pretty sure he knows what's inside the device.
Unregistered wrote:One word: software. Can Nokia get over sending out beta software and actually produce a model that has reliable software from the get go? Nokia has a proven track record of producing okay hardware but is let down by shitty software. Will the N8 be another dog out of the box or not? This is the big question. The wonderful thing about this site is no matter how good or how crappy it is, AAS can be counted on to find good in bad, up in down, left in right. Nokia has a safe harbor here. Nothing bad ever comes out of AAS.
If you dislike AAS so much, why don't you just piss off somewhere else more to your liking...?
Unregistered wrote:Again great hardware only to be crippled by typical buggy Nokia firmware. Who wants to bet that the moment it is released there will be a host of firmware issues the kill the user experience? I've learned to stop getting excited by Nokia releases. The N97 and subsequent releases have killed all enthusiasm for me. Probably time to move on to either Android or iPhone. At least their firmware is miles ahead of Nokia.
So you were excited by the N97 and were stupid enough to went ahead and buy it? Then you got no business trying to act smart here.
Unregistered wrote:Hardware, hardware, hardware !!!!!Can you get it through your head? If the hardware is good but the OS is crap (which Nokia has a talent for delivering) then it is all moot. You have to have GREAT software to go with the hardware to get a GREAT user experience.
Wake up and stop listening to the apologists for Nokia. See how the phone works when it is in the wild.
You're the one who needs to get it through your head! People like the hardware. You're here just to pounce on every single comments regarding the hardware. You don't like the software, that's fine. Others do! That doesn't make them apologists! Get that through your head and go f*ck off elsewhere you Android apologist.
So, now everyone can shut up:
Its Sensor size is 1/1.83″ btw. As per dinning.
