The first fruit of the enterprise alliance between Microsoft and Nokia, which was announced in August year, is now available. Microsoft Communicator Mobile for Nokia, a 'unified communications client', is now available in Nokia's Ovi Store for the Nokia E72 and E52. The application ties in to Microsoft's Office Communications Server 2007 product; it offers the ability to view colleague's status and then choose the most appropriate communication method - instant messaging, email, text or voice call.

I can picture it now. IT departments all over the world will be appraising it and declaring it to work well. Cost analyses will be performed and it will be found to be the most cost effective solution. However, just before deployment, the pointy-haired-bosses will veto it.

PHB: I'm not giving up my Blackberry/iPhone because I need to be able to pick up email.
BOFH: But you can pick up your email with this, and do a lot more besides.
PHB: But it's Nokia, how can it be be as good as Blackberry/iPhone?
BOFH: Nokia make very good smartphones.
PHB: Are you sure? How come I haven't read about them, then? Surely they're just a commodity mobile phone producer who have only just got into the smartphone market.
BOFH: No, actually they've been making smartphones for years. Before the iPhone, in fact. And they've got the biggest market share.
PHB: You don't know what you're talking about. They're a bit player and the market is clearly dominated by Blackberry and Apple. Anyway, Andrew Orlowski says Nokia will be going bust any day now.
BOFH: <speechless>
PHB: Anyway, I can pick up my email with my Blackberry/iPhone. And they can run "apps". Here, look at this.....

Can picture that scene already, in fact I've been part of conversations similar to that.

But Andrew who?

So, they've done an enterprise version, when does the Live Messenger come out?

Of course, you know what the really big problem is here? Despite the popularity of S60 and the number of different devices running it, this software is only available for 2 of them. This level of fragmentation is a *huge* problem in my eyes, and undermines the whole point of buying into any one OS; hopefully, this is something Nokia will sort out in the future....

It would be like Microsoft releasing Windows software that only ran on a Dell with a 15" screen; crazy.

Agreed 100% This is a complete failure on Nokia's part.

Hey Rafe, you'd know: we Americans getting any of the white E72 love from Nokia over on this side of the pond? Yes? Not likely? Snowball's chance in hell?

just tried it on the n97, installs and runs fine, but no connecting back to my sip server, not sure what settings they use yet haha, but to reiterate, works fine on the 5th series phone N97

OK...

I've also managed to acquire the SIS file (by hacking the User Agent String) and install it on my phone (an E-66), and after continuing the installation after the version compatability warning the application is installed.

However, even though the installation had an icon in the Installations folder, the application doesn't start. Any ideas? What did you have to do to get it going on the N97?

Well, I have my own Nokia E72, And I using this application to this phone, And the application connects directly with a companys communications systems to streamline mobile collaboration. It allow me to see my colleagues availability, and click to communicate with them using the best method, from IM to email, text to phone call.

jay: would REALLY like to know how you got it going on a N97
