Is it bidirectional in anyway apart from the communication and HDCP protocols - e.g. Can content be transferred onto the device via the HDMI connection?

The HDMI connector on the N8 is a HDMI type c or sometimes known as mini HDMI. There's no other adaptor required and compatible cables are readily available. So you'll need a cable with this connector on one end and standard HDMI on the other of course.

This is only for output to a TV or other AV equipment that supports HDMI. For data transfer you continue to use the micro USB connection.

the more i am waiting for this is....making me feel good

How is Nokia planning to have non removable battery...felt with the change of platform in N900 to maemo will made me feel that i am having my NOKIA back.
..but with Symbian^3 i am really sceptical, that should i have to wait.
looks that N900 is much better for now....
