Nokia X6 16GB - part 1 (hardware, camera, performance)

You'll remember that Ewan did a four part review of the Nokia X6 32GB (Comes with Music) a few months back? (links: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4) It's fair to say that quite a bit of his criticism was based on early software issues and observations over the slow speed of the 32GB version's mass memory. Fast forward to May 2010 and we have a X6 16GB with more mature v20 firmware and a far faster mass memory. Can this cheaper edition succeed where the CwM version failed? And is the X6's hardware and software now ready for the prime time? Here's part one of Steve Litchfield's two part review of the Nokia X6-00. Part two will follow on Thursday.

Read on in the full article.

Steve, any ideas as to when this firmware will be available to all X6 owners? I bought the 32GB CwM version, SIM free, direct from Nokia's online shop in the hope that I would not be left behind when it came to updated firmware. The NSU servers are still insisting that my latest version is V12 which is highly irritating when even networked (O2, Phones4U and Virgin) variant firmwares have access to V20. 😡 :icon13:

Strongly suggest you complain via the official Nokia Discussions boards - someone will pick it up. My sympathies though - Nokia are just terrible at missing specific product codes out. Or maybe that should very GOOD at missing codes out.... 8-)

@steve the camera on the X6 is completely different than on the 5800... It looks like it's from the same family as the N79/N82/N85/N95/N96/N97/N97mini/N900 camera!

Just look at the size of the lens opening on the X6 vs. the 5800. There's more going on than 3 MP vs. 5 MP here - low light performance on the X6 is significantly better than on the 5800.

Here's a picture I took where you can see the difference in lens opening (top left corner): http://www.flickr.com/photos/tnkgrl/4514198718/sizes/o/in/set-72157623837213956/

Hmm... you can't always go by the immediately apparent 'opening'. The low light shots I've taken on the X6 look very similar to those on the 5800. Maybe it's the sensor used that's letting the side down? Plus you can never discount software algorithms, which can be improved in firmware.

[later] 5 low light tests shot later, I agree that the lens is bigger than on the 5800 but I think the sensor is the same size. And there's a lot of software noise reduction and artificial sharpening going on. In short, it's better than the 5800's camera but short of the units on the N97/N96/N95 etc.

Thanks for getting involved though - I'll tweak some of the wording!

Steve

With firmware V12 my X6 16GB stored Bluetooth Messages in E:/ Receivedfiles/. Now with firmware V20 it stores in Messages like other S60 device. Anybody a idea how to change this?

V20 has the same feature, nothing's been removed. It'll be something else you've installed probably - my v20 X6 uses the new system and it works brilliantly.

@steve yes, low light performance on the X6 is worse than on the top-range N82/N95/N96/N97/N97mini/N900 for sure... But in my experience, it's leaps and bounds better than the 5800!

I think the X6 sensor is bigger than the 5800 (physical size), but with perhaps individual pixels of identical size - it's probably the same lens/sensor combo as the N79/N85, ie. a slighly detuned version of the top-range Nseries lens/sensor combo.
