Ovi Maps 3.04 (3.4) improves performance, adds Qype

Nokia has released an update, version 3.04, for Ovi Maps. The new version adds formal support for WiFi as a positioning method as part of an overhaul of the positioning functionality, plus significant performance improvements for search, zooming and map panning, a number of consumer-friendly UI tweaks and the addition of Qype information to the places database. Read on for more details.

Every time there is an Ovi Maps upgrade I have the same dilemma - is it worth several MB of memory over the build in the firmware version? And now with version 3 Ovi Maps became twice the size - 9 MB. Why is that - is it programmed in qt?

I have tried to use Ovi Maps 3.03 (previous version to this), and have to say I am not very impressed on the route calculation. In fact, it took me 4 miles out of my way, to get to a place that was only 1 mile away from me, and I could even see a sign on the road on how to get there ... but I though I would give Ovi Maps a chance ..... but it was awful

I actually found that Garmin XT gave much better routing, and took me direct to the location.

Does this version have better routing.

Has anyone else found this with Ovi Maps?

My n97 mini keeps restarting every time I try to use this. I even tried uninstalling the previous version (3.03) and then installing 3.04, but am facing the same issue.

Anyone have any idea what should I do???

Is the map loader the only way to download the country/city maps to your phone? It would be great if one can download the maps directly from the Ovi store itself, like have another tab for Navigation, and have the same functionality of the map loader (choosing the continent, then country, then city).

"Starting 2 weeks ago, N97, N97 mini, 6710 Navigator and X6 ship with the new Ovi Maps, a car holder and a car charger in box. 5800 XpressMusic, 5230, E52 and E72 will ship with the new Ovi Maps and a car holder. "

you know, my biggest complain on Ovi Maps 3.03 (besides the poor GPS precision on my N97) was the lack of POIs for Brasil (where I live). But now with 3.04 they added one service for Brasil, Apontador (www.apontador.com.br) and we now have a lot of good POIs available. This is great. if they could only fix my GPS antena...

You are lucky! I know the answer. Turn of wifi positioning. It still does not work on my N97 mini either! But after unchecking the wifi positioning method everything worked like a charm.

Yep, I second tenoce's suggestion. It was a well-known problem in 3.04 beta, it's a shame the bug made it to the official release.

I also switch off network positioning because I'd rather be told that it hasn't yet worked out where I am rather than being (in)accurate to 1,500 metres.

Still a great app though 😊

I recently bought an n97 from the mymall shopping centre in cyprus. i have had so many problems with the mapping system that i took it back to the shop. these phone companies should take the rest of us into consideration too when developing software.

on my n97 it is the same as in beta version....if i start it...it restart my phone!
deleting all bevor is useless!

my issue is that i cannot search for intersections in 3.03 ovi maps for my e71 ... old version allowed me to do that

Thanks for the suggestion, but I cant turn it off. My phone restarts within a second of me running Ovi Maps 3.04. Thats not enough time to turn off wifi positioning... 😞

The wifi positioning in Maps appears as installed as a separate component in the list of installed application. Maybe if I uninstall that particular part and run Maps......

Do not start OVI Maps. Go to Settings -> Phone settings -> App. settings -> Positioning -> Positioning settings

There you can uncheck wifi positioning.

Man, it seems everybody's having issues with Maps 3.04 (and 3.03). I'll try it, I guess, on my NAM E66, but now I've set my expectations low.

Given that Qype doesn't include the U.S., is this download even worth trouble?

Quote: Nokia are collecting their own data about WiFi hotspots, rather than licensing a third party database. With Ovi Maps' large installed base there's clearly scope to collect such data quickly, although they do say that they will not collection such information without a user's permission. /Quote

How can we give permission to collect Wifi data? Because in my Country (Switzerland) Nokia have not a good Database. So i can collect data for next release of ovi maps.

Thanks Tenoce, works now. For some reason, the initial positioning after the update took a hell lot of time. It seemed quicker with 3.03.

I also had the reboot on startup, nicely cured by unchecking WiFi positioning (thanks for that would never have guessed it).

My first reaction was how on earth could Nokia release an application with such a fundamental, and widely reported, bug. But I wonder if it is firmware related ? The installation makes a lot of fuss that you have to update your phone before installing this version but like many people my 5800 is still stuck on V40 and cannot access V50. Have Nokia assumed the very latest firmware and forgotten that many people don't get it for months after release ?

3.04 (or 3.4) has been out for more than just a few weeks. I had installed it on my 5230, and then when I upgraded to the v20 firmware it was included in that.

Not had any problems with it whatsoever.

When I upgraded to v20 (5230) a few weeks ago , Ovi maps 3.03 was instead installed at the D: drive , freeing a lot of precious C: drive space. Now I installed this 3.04 and it is installed in C Drive instead making it come down to 37MB from 52MB 😞 That's a lot of space I lost.

Ovi Maps 3.4 works just fine on my Nokia N97-3. Perhaps prior to installing the new update, you all should first uninstall "Nokia Maps" and "Ovi Maps" in the application manager.

I dont know why, but for some reason 3.04 seems a bit slower than 3.03. In 3.03, if I was in a building and GPS was not reachable, my tentative position using network positioning would be fairly quick. Now it takes lot of time.

I have my doubts that this release has been tested properly.

while Ovi maps is great, Nokia really are a fail when it comes to firmware updates for phones. Sim free phones are fine but carrier controlled are a mess which lets be honest most people get phones on contract, or at least the more expensive phones.

If carriers dont let Nokia release the firmware to the phones, how is it Nokia's fault?
