Expired Handy Day demo color problem

16 replies · 5,319 views · Started 22 March 2003

I downloaded the demo for Handy Day when the first version came out. I then installed the V2 demo with the possibility to change the color theme. This had the effect of changing the color of ALL windows on the P800.

Fine, until the demo period expired and wouldn't let me back in to undo the changes I'd made. Uninstall has no effect.

Any idea how I can get my color scheme set back to normal?

Yes, download this app. In the istallation process a window will appear asking you to select the colour scheme of your choice, uncheck all the boxes but leave the one that says Sky blue checked, as that is the default colour. Reboot the phone and voila!

Has anybody else besides me realised that the sky blue claimed to be default is NOT the same blue as the default? It is slightly more yellowish. You can see this clearly if you go to the phone dialer window. The number pad is the original blue, and it is CLEARLY a different blue than the sky blue.

I had to restore from a previous backup to restore the original colour.

Good enough for me for now, thanks!

Some of the Handy Day color schemes render text (like bookmarks) invisible and unreadable, so at least your little ap got me back to some semblance of normal!

I'll let you all know if Epocware respond to my e-mail to them.

Thanks again for the quick fix!

Today I got a one-line e-mail from Epocware about this problem:

There is no solution.

A) Rude
B) What kind of fraud/blackmail is this? You try their demo, and when it runs out, it leaves you with no choice but to purchase their product, or stick with whatever the last color scheme was that you used their software to choose?

I've bought almost every product Epocware has made for the PocketPC and now for the P800. But I won't buy this one just to solve a problem THEY caused. And I won't ever buy another Epocware product again.

Get the file manager and delete the file c:\system\data\colscm.dat
Then reboot your phone and you get the original colors.

Many thanks, I'll give that a try as well!

Why you can tell me that and the developer can't is beyond me...

This is the e-mail I just sent to Epocware (and Handango) on the subject. They've gotten me a bit riled up, and I'm in a fightin' mood! 😊

Dear Epocware,

A few points related to your e-mail below:

A) Not true, several people on the internet have been able to help me, but they shouldn't have been responsible for solving the problem, you should have.

B) Treatment like the e-mail below is RUDE and has inspired me not to purchase anything from your company ever again. I used to be a very good customer of your products for Pocket PC, and now for P800, but that is over.

You lure me to try your software, and then when the demo is expired, you leave my P800 permanently changed unless I buy your software. This is very bad business, and I will share this story of fraud with everyone I can.

This is the e-mail I have just sent to Handango:

Dear Handango,

I want to warn you that the Epocware P800 Handy Day 2.0 demo version can cause irreversible color scheme changes to the P800 once the demo expires unless you purchase the product. This is a fraudulent practice that forces you to purchase the software to solve the problem caused by the demo (or otherwise dig around on the P800 in places where most people shouldn't). In my case, the last color scheme I'd chosen did things like render my bookmarks illegible (because the text was white).

I ask you to consider stopping providing the demo for this product until they have solved the problem. Their only answer to me on this issue has been "Sorry, we can't help you, you have to buy the product." This essentially amounts to blackmail.

I have been an excellent customer of yours for some time, and would ask you to consider my request. Their product is good, but this particular business practice should not be tolerated by a respected company like yours.

Looking forward to your response,

Christopher

I had exactly the same problems after installing, the new DEMO version.
apart from this problem my battery performance ins considerably worse than before (less than 8 hours). I am not sure if I can blame Handyday 2.0. Has anyone had the same problems?

Epocware has been kind enough to inform me of two very important facts:

1) They are not rude. It's just Russian/German custom to respond to customers with one line emails that offer no help or information.
2) They will release an upgrade in the coming days that extends the demo period by 15 days so we can fix the problem.

Why you can tell me that and the developer can't is beyond me...

Must be that I'm a better developer than he is... 8)

if you want to screw em go to #palmwarez on efnet in IRC and get it for free...

Handy Day 2.5 has +15 days trial. You can install the trial version of Handy Day 2.5 and change the color scheme 😉

Whilst I understand your frustation, accusing a company of FRAUD and BLACKMAIL on an internet board is LIBEL. And could get this board closed down. Which I think we would all rather not happen.

I tried backdating my phones date and it worked.

Libel laws vary all over the world I wouldn't jump to too many conclusions if I were you.

You must also remember that something cannot be defamatory or libellous if it is true (in English law at least).

Saying this is fraud does seem a bit harsh, but I have to agree with the original poster. He acted in good faith and for Epocware then to say a problem he could not reasonably have foreseen is tough luck unless he pays them money is blackmail.

Nevertheless, this appears to be no more than a cock-up. I strongly subscribe to the view that cock-ups are a lot more common than conspiracies and Epocware have eventually responded. I hope that this has taught them to enhance their standards of customer care.
