I know this isn't the perfect place to post this, but since I can't start a thread in news or announcements I thought I'd put it here. I was pretty shocked to read that Nokia announced from now on they will use MeeGo (maemo linux) and not Symbian for all flagship N series devices released after the N8. Symbian will be reserved for feature phones and other lower cost phones. Feels weird after using S60 so many years.
No more Symbian flagship devices for Nokia?
+1 Interesting
Was just going to post this myself is being quoted sourced CNET OZ and Engadget picked up on story too via CNET not clear if Reuters is picking up on same source or is a separate confirmation.
Whichever would very much like to hear feedback from the AAS team on this and whether Nokia is confirming story.
Obviously is only the N series so Symbian would still be in C and E series and could just be that N series flagships aren't going to run on Symbian not the whole range (looking at new numbering series anything <N7 would seem bit odd on Meego to me if their market/price ranging is still in place at which point this isn't news at all.
If it is it isn't helpful for the N8 or S^4 and justified or not will lead to speculation on Nokia's commitment to Symbian. Not helpful to the platform at all whe n to some extent it's being assailed on all sides., Pocket lint review of SE Vivaz Pro the other day was pretty damming of it citing mane problem of poor U/ OS platform with limited software availability. I know may not be fair but that's the brush Symbian is tarnished with these days and needs to be able to fight back against - a greater sense of urgency rather than Lee William's blandishments would help.
Nokia need to get their press dept. to clarify the situation as a matter of urgency now that it is being quoted on Reuters after all their shares are doing badly enough already (mak9ing new lows again today) without platform confusion.
probably not new news, i think. this was 'sort of' announced few months ago, that all flagship devices from future on will be meego, and symbian will start powering thenew generation of (not-so)dumbphones
Personally, I think this is great news. Symbian ^3 looks too much like ^1 and still retains much of the clunkiness of ^1 too. It just doesn't seem to cut it against newer OS's like Android or, dare I say it, iOS4.
Nokia need to get an OS that is designed for the hardware of today, not an OS that originated in the hardware of yesteryear.
My 5th Ed./^1 experience has been awful with my N97. My X6 arrived today and that feels a tad more polished but still retains the clunky nature.
I'm all for something new, fresh, innovative and far better suited to the way mobile devices are used today.

So is there likely to be any Maemo forums (on AAS?) in the future - is there an N900 sub forum in the pipeline? - Perhaps Rafe should embrace both S60 and Maemo....? RAFE!!!
(AAS is a fantastic site, don't want it to fade ways if S60 loses momentum).

Rafe has already started All About Maemo...
It might be worth considering renaming it to All About MeeGo as the Maemo brand will be dropped shortly in favour of this.
Well Rafe has wrote a very well informed view of what this announcement means.

Yes we'll be covering MeeGo (as menitoned by lovesign) - more on this soon.
At the same time it is very premature to write off Symbian. It likely be a / the major open mobile platform for some time to come. And see post alphamusic linked to.

Very informative article, Rafe. 😉 I had kind of tunnel-vision on the high-end nokia phones and ignored the mid range, which will still run Symbian for years to come.
So, when you have time to organise it, can we have sub forum(s) for the current Maemo/Meego handset from Nokia - i.e. N900 - as well as for any new models they release please?
