The Debian Linux distribution has "unstable" and "testing" repositories for exactly that reason, and they both come with "if they trash your server, don't come grumbling to us" warnings attached.
Your suggestion to use hx4 instead of hx6-speed is another case in point.
I make it a point of sanity to never buy generation 1, unless it's been proven for a year.
And then I make it a point of fun to fiddle.
My take.
The bottom line is you have to know what you're doing first, as well as keep backups.
