Where is "Google search by voice"?

14 replies · 4,940 views · Started 16 July 2010

I can't find the google app that enables 'Search google by voice'.

All the links seem to point at the mobile search web page which contains a link saying "New! Search Google by voice.", but that just links back to the same page.

Anybody know where it is or how to do this?

Ta.

Same problem here too.

It's been like that for about 4/5 weeks.

I have an old copy of the app but after searching and coming up with links, it connects to my built-in browser as usual and then I am presented with a blank page in the browser.

Thanks, but it still doesn't work on my N97.

It does bring up the search results but when I select one it opens the built-in browser and stays on a blank page. :frown:

Strange how it doesn't work for you. It worked for me, but I downloaded it a couple of months ago onto my N97.

It could possibly be due to:-

1. Firmware update v22

2. SPB Shell installed

That's all I can think of.

This is really hard to find elsewhere, so I've put it here for you, enjoy 😊

Just tried this and it works for me, although it did say "Not compatible with device" during the installation which probably explains the following two issues:

1. The N97 does not have a 'C' button so once the app is loaded (in background) I have to switch to the app using task manager or open the keyboard and press backspace.

2. Display problems in landscape mode.

Functionally it works perfectly so I'll be leaving it loaded from now on and taking the 2.6MB hit.

ironass, I also run SPB Mobile Shell and have firmware v22.

--- EDIT ---

Argghh!

It worked for the first few times (before I posted the above message) but now I get the same symptom as ironass: a blank screen after clicking the search results.

Nah! Nah! Ne! Nah! Nah!

It's not working for me now. I'm getting the blank screen as well. The last time it worked for me is a week ago.

Here's a workaround: After you do your search and get the results, press <Options> and then select <Search for [what you searched for]>. You will get the same results screen. Then you can select on the links and the page will open.

It's an extra step. If you are simply typing in your searches, you should just use the mobile Google web site. The web site doesn't need to reload the search. If you are using the widget, you need to redo the search right away after getting the result screen. The Google widget is still faster if using voice recognition. It's just two additional presses.

It also still works if you select the history list.

With this embarrassment and those damn xperia ads, it's enough to make me buy an iP....uuurgh...*haemorrhage*

(yes, I did have to look up that spelling)

just get vlingo as zxon mentioned... its free unless you wanna dictate your SMS email etc... (who actually does that) 😉

Thanks Stuntman for that workaround, as I started getting the blank screen thing after I had posted the app, I can live with a couple of extra taps.

Vlingo is useless at understanding my northern accent, whereas google works almost flawlessly.
