SIM unlock an N97

I'm at the end of my contract, and will want to get my N97 unlocked. Three UK have quoted 15 to give me an unlock code. I have a few questions someone can answer:

1. Do any/all of the unlocking methods invalidate the warranty? If so, which ones?

2. Are there any risks with going down the 'dodgy phone shop' unlocking route?

3. Which method would you recommend (unlock code from network, unlock code from internet, DIY via PC, phone shop)?

Thanks.

A local independent unlocking/repair shop in my town BRICKED my mobile whilst trying to unlock it. Fortunately, they were good enough to get me a replacement handset. You may not be so fortunate with another independent repair shop.

I recommend you pay 3 the 15.

Do it via the vendor. It'll cost the same as a high street option and you have the added bonus that it'll be supported by your vendor if it goes wrong.

A lot of these shops/websites say they can do it but most can't and, as in the case of dez borders, actually damage your handset.

I would pay your operator the 15 for the code, which is probably what you would pay a shop/website anyway.

A couple of years ago, I wanted my N95 unlocking - was locked to Orange at the time - and I paid Orange a fee of 20gbp for an unlock code. Very simple to do, very easy, and pain free, and IMHO, worth every penny. I wouldn't want to risk it leaving with someone who was going to 'hack' into the phone, so I go along with the others - pay the 15quid, it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Cheers for the replies. So it's not worth shopping around for a cheaper code on the net? I guess there's no guarantee they would work?
