The Nokia N8, the first publicly announced Symbian^3 device, is available for pre-order from Nokia Italy's web store. It is priced at €469 (£390 / $600), with availability stated as being at the end of September, just in line with Nokia's stated Q3 shipment date. Nokia Italy is offering free delivery and say that customers pre-ordering will be 'among the first to receive the new N8'. Other Nokia stores will no doubt make their pre-order processes available shortly.

End of September? Jeese that's still 2 months away and we have already been waiting ages. I'll tap myself in the back if I don't buy something else before this is released.

Note that the article says "€370 (before the usual local taxes and subsidies)".

In any case, the price in the original announcements and/or press releases never seem to reflect reality even when you add taxes to the price and allow for exchange rate differences, too. I don't know if this is due to the sales/distribution channels adding more margins to the prices than Nokia anticipated, or whether what Nokia says it'll charge when they announce device ends up being way too low for when they actually/eventually ship the device, or some combination thereof.

I also do suspect that many retailers taking pre-orders do not even know what the device is going to cost when they finally manage to get a price from either Nokia or a distributor, so they use a high-enough price that they think is enough to keep them on the "safe side" from their angle.

@N/A, what you say is fine except the price in discussion here is on the Nokia Online Store. I would expect that there are no retailers involved here, and Nokia are directly selling the device. Perhaps they are looking at charging a premium for offering an opportunity of been one of the 1st to own the device.

I don't know about that, but Nokia selling their own devices in their own web store presents also an interesting dilemma for Nokia...

If they price the stuff in their own web store lower than what operators/retailers charge, then they upset the "channel" as they "undercut" them (they order less, prefer competitor's phones instead, etc.).

If they price the stuff in their own web store higher than what operators/retailers charge, then they lose sales (why would you buy a device directly from Nokia at a higher price, if you can get it cheaper from an operator or a retailer?).

Many thanks - saves me having to look up italian tax rates. So in that case the price is pretty much in line with what Nokia originally quoted.

Why did Nokia start Showing Off the N8 in April when the phone was not even ready to Produce,as the other companies are sure to react to the N8, an release a more up to date mobile to try dint the sales of the N8,people now instead of waiting for the N8 will look an buy an alternative mobile instead an all that does is dint the sales target of the N8,but at Nokia they never seem to realise the big mistakes they make an this just shows why there sales an shares are falling,Nokia seem to have got themselves to Bigheaded thinking any mobile they release will Succede like Apple is Acting Nowdays, but mobiles nowdays are a really important gadgets to people an if the softwares to slow an buggy, people will switch to more efficient mobile, but why have we not gone one now from Nokia

Several things come to mind ...

> Hurry up Nokia
There are a lot of people working to get this right before the "Go" is pressed

Nokia has to give operators & share holders reassurance about its near term plans, so big updates to the product line sometimes get trailed early.

I have noticed that UK vendors are allowing pre-orders too, at least Play - asking price 449.99, proposed ship date is 31 August.

Steve or Rafe, when the N8 is released, are you guys going to do a comparison review with the Motorola Droid X and Samsung Galaxy devices?

like every one else. really excited about a top quality nokia camera device, but the wait is excruciating!

i've been waiting to upgrade my n82 since october 2009, with nothing decent on the horizon - no, i did try the satio for 2 weeks in january. terrible, really. there has been a retro article on how good the n82 is, and it is. mine is going to a good friend when i get a n8. i just want to try some new gasodget goodness!

i can't believe i've waited this long for a new phone, and another 2 months to go!!! i'll happily wait if i know nokia is giving it the extra month or so to skip a few firmware updates so it's a polished product. all my nokia phones have been bug free, so when you do get one (cough - satio) it's painful. so nokia, please release before the end of sept and please do it right!
