I have bought a brand new Nokia E71-2. I started having "memory full" problems by just using two applications at the same time (for example: web browser while having Nokia messaging in background, radio player and nokia chat, etc). Also, the Ovi store application does not even open.
I tried all things explained on the web: (hard reset, soft reset, upgrading firmware to version 400, etc) but the error is still present.
I installed a third party Symbian application (Y-Tasks) which reports the used RAM and storage RAM available. When the phone just turned on (and no background apps - nokia messaging, etc) It reports: Free Memory - 6.8 mbytes - Total Memory - 46 Mbytes !!
With that application I saw how running the web browser, the email application, etc., the free memory reduced to just 100 - 200 kbytes.
It seemed strange, so I installed the same application on my old phone which runs fine many applicacions at the same time (Nokia E51). It reports Free - 38MB - Total Memory - 79 Mbytes. That means they both (the E51 and the E71) are using the same amount of memory for the operating system, but the difference is the Total Memory in the E71!
That makes me think somehow the operating system is not recognizing the full amount of memory in the phone. What could be the reason? Maybe it's a hardware problem? Is it possible? Maybe flashing the phone or servicing could be of any help?

48 MB of total RAM at booting-up is not much . I think it should be at least 70 to 80 MB , if not even more for an Unbranded (not locked to a provider) E71 .
Did you allready use the Option in Y-Tasks : Options > Compress RAM ?

Anyway, I'm still confused about why Y-Tasks only reports in the E71 48Mb of TOTAL RAM (on C😊, while in a E51, it reports 79Mb of TOTAL RAM on C:
It's not an issue of the "memory being used by applications", but how much is the TOTAL (used and not used) amount of RAM.
It's as if I had 2 memory modules of 1Gb each in my PC, for a total of 2Gb of RAM. Then, one day, one of the modules get damaged. I would then just have 1Gb available for applications.
That's what I would want to know, if maybe the memory module is corrupted, or the firmware is causing the problem (I tried the firmware v.200, 400, 500), or anything else?
It seems you are confusing RAM and C: . In Symbian there are these main memories :
C: = device memory . For storage of Files . Text , multimedia , etc + applications which are not installed on E:
D: = RAM (random access memory) .
E: = MemoryCard (some devices : MassMemory) : HDD on PC
Z: = ROM (Read Only Memory) = Firmware , Operating System files
Keep C: as empty as possible , by transferring your personal files and/or installed Applications to E: :

This! Memory full simply means you've run out of disk space on the C drive. RAM is something entirely different. The C drive in the E71 is 110mb and 130mb in the E51.
