N95 8GB reading asian fonts.

1 replies · 5,137 views · Started 11 August 2010

Just picked up a n95 8gb yesterday and new to the S60 so not quite sure what to do. I updated the phone to the latest firm v35, and for some reason I can`t view asian characters, they just come up as squares.

I`ve tried to change the coding of the phone via NSS but it doesn`t seem to work.

I just want it to view and be able to write chinese, japanese, korean etc.

any help is greatly appreciated

thanks,

The built-in system fonts do not support Asian characters (when a character does not exist in the font, a square is displayed, instead).

Nokia adds Japanese fonts only to phones sold in Japan, Chinese fonts only to phones sold in Chinese speaking regions, Korean fonts only to phones sold in South Korea.

Presumably you have a phone with firmware intended for a country/region without these languages. Changing the product code makes no difference, unless you also update the firmware to match.

You could also just replace the fonts:

That, however, won't be enough if you also want to type/enter text in Asian languages.
