Unlike the N97 (and some other N devices) the N8 does not have the option to store your text messages on Mass Memory or SD Card.
I can see why this has been done as you lose access to them when connected via USB and have to reset message storage when disconnecting.
In contrast to the N97, the N8 does have 254MB of phone memory (171MB on mine now) so, hopefully this won't be an issue for most users... or will it?
The annoying thing is that if you switch between phones, you can't take your messages with you. Is there any way of storing or syncing them outside of the phone, so that they are available after a phone switch?

Ovi Suite can back up your messages but as I see you're a Mac user you could try BluePhoneElite.

BluePhoneElite was great.. unfortunately its now discontinued.. 😞
Hopefully the next upgarde will give you a choice for storage location.
As for copying from one phone to another use the data transfer function on the n8.
Menu - applications - tools - phone setup - data transfer
it does it via bluetooth and works fine
