What needs to be done. ASAP.

The Symbian^3 UI is being held back by attachment to the s60v3 ui. This attachment needs to be severed with the sharpest sword ever (to cause as little damage as possible). Four things spring to my mind instantly:
1. Those Soft keys. at the bottom of the screen. It's been two years, come on. I'm sure you know by now that 4 buttons can fit there. And also on the layer above. I'm absolutely sure functions can be put there.
2. Why are notifications (and all related things) still fond of attaching themselves to the bottom of the screen. It's a touch screen, my thumb usually hovers around the center when I'm using the phone. That's where they should appear.
3. There's WAY too much text in that bland as *** font. Get a thinner (possibly rounder) version for smaller text e.g. for descriptions of the camera scene settings under the title.
4. More graphics for list items (e.g. the three horizontal lines for 'options' is pretty universal now, is it not?). Frankly, List format is sooo out-of-date it's not even funny. Consider changing most menus to grid format.

I have a whole list of other stuff that I might paste on-line soon. Please bear with me, just thought ssome one might want to collate helpful suggestions somewhere.

P.S. I'm currently trialling SPB Shell on my 5800XM and I have to say I'm ashamed of Nokia and triply proud of the staff of SPB. Almost everything is perfect (I mean input and placement wise), it doesn't lag (even with 3 screen full of widgets) and it integrates into the built in components just fine. The RAM consumption is pretty high (can't seem to run opera mobile any more) but I just can't turn it off. The Panoramic wallpaper is very well implemented too. One more thing I love: the ability to see communications with a contact beside their card. These people should be taking nokia programmers/designers under their wing!

....good points well made ! I agree the SPB Shell is amazing for the wow factor and some nicely implemented / well thought out usability ideas. 😊

haven't Nokia already committed themselves by saying a UI overhaul is one of their main items for 2011? UI compatibility from S^4 through S^3 was also announced? everything that has been complained in the first post is now being addressed by Nokia

That compatibility needs to be severed is what I'm saying. Why do you think we have the mediocre UI of today? Because 'compatibility' is being maintained. Compatibility be damned, fix the UI and interested developers will follow. A hard line needs to be drawn and NOW!

id rather have the s3 ui as it is now rather then have to have spb shell running

its messy , not very clear and takes alot longer for me to do stuff

symbiam is quick easy efficent and good to use i installed the demo of spb and deleted it after 2 days it was just confusing and a waste of time when the original symbian is fine and effective

if people want to install spb shell thats great and its good to have choice but id rather have s3 as it is thanks

what id like to see is a decent dnla/upnp application built into the system for sharing files

the n900 had this mastered really well and with the n8's hdmi out and better processor etc it should be on board

according to symbian devolopers the foundations are there it just needs an app written

as i said, that's what their main 2011 item is, to fix the UI up.
