Hi
I have used NSS to change product codes on a few Nokias I the past (N73, N95, 5800). Does N8 debranding work the same way?
If I get an N8 it will probably a SIM free phone from CPW or Play.com but I presume debranding will still be needed in order to get firmware updates in a timely fashion.

this post covers it. BUT be careful .. I managed to toast mine! probably a computer issue.
But basically you don't change the product code .. you just install alternative firmware which you download using navifirm.
You then install it using phoenix (well you would if nothing bad happens)
Good Luck!
NSS does not work with N8 as yet. If you want to debrand, the only way currently is to reflash using Phoenix and is a lot more complicated than NSS/NSU methods. Seems to be higher risks as well given the amount of brick rates I hear from this method.
I wrote a reply .. for some reason its being "moderated" .. the thing is phoenix can brick your phone .. but you don't change the product code. This is good for warranty purposes 😊
I'm reasonably experienced in doing these flashes and I bricked mine .. so be very careful
just to let you know few things before you attempt to flash your phone using Phoenix.
1. DO NOT USE vista or seven to do the job, USE WinXP or you will brick your phone at about 50%.
2. if you manage to brick your phone you can flash it using phoenix in dead mode!
Learned the hard way 😞
So your saying even if i do brick it....then it can be fixed by flashing in dead mode?
I've looking at the list of firmware on navifirm and there are way too many and don't know which one to pick. I have a rogers branded phone in Canada and want the firmware that I would get if I were to buy from Nokia in North America.
Basically I'm looking for the orginial north american firmware from Nokia. Can some one please tell me which one that is?
Thanks

Well. was flashing with Phoenix at about 50% application stopped responding and just closed off. Phone dead.
Found old trusty laptop with XP on it and dead mode worked like a charm. Nokia N8 is running on moded firmware which allows installation of apps without being signed.
None. could not get phone detected in Vista or win 7 in dead mode. Only XP

was the phone wasn't even recognised as a device by windows. (yes XP)
It was really really dead.
You could long press the power button to reset it .. Phoenix would see the phone for a fraction of a second and then it was gone again.
I haven't found a decent guide to "dead mode" .. I'd appreciate any insight or pointers to online info you might have.
Cheers
