Just thought id let you know I got my N8 from the nokia uk website on Pay and Go. Its cheaper than buying it sim free, and mine arrived Unlocked and with generic unbranded firmware.
Because you have to buy a �10 top up and pay delivery it works out as �383 as opposed to �429 sim free from the same site!
Carphonewarehouse is selling them sim free for �379.99
you can only get the colour ones from nokia. every where else just has black or silver.
I'm thinking about ordering the blue N8 through nokiadirect.co.uk.
Can anybody else confirm that the PAYG phones ordered via nokiadirect are definitely unlocked?
I would hate to have to return it so want to double check!

I realise that you want a blue one and so you have to buy from Nokia Direct BUT...
if anyone wants a black one and are happy being with O2 PAYG then if you buy direct from O2 then they are just �330 delivered.
I got mine from O2. The only branding is a splash screen on startup/shutdown and that is all.
My wife wanted a blue one and paid the �379 from Nokia.
Yeap. It's not just that. I heard the O2 PAYG phones are still locked to the network - is this true?
I really need 100% confirmation that they aren't locked as I have to travel abroad frequently...but thanks for the tip!

Is there a way of checking if the phone is locked without putting in a non-O2 sim? Both my wife and I are on O2 so I can't check. Sorry.
The manager of the O2 store near where I work told me a few weeks ago that O2 only apply network locks to Apple and Blackberry phones. I know the XDA I used to have from them on contract wasn't locked.
�320 from Tesco Direct and �20 worth of reward points. But locked to Tesco but can be unlocked for �20. Also I think you may get �20 of extra credit once you register a card (please check).

I got mine from Tesco too on PAYG and got it unlocked by them for �20. You pay for �10 credit which they triple to �30. I believe they are out of stock online, phone a store and ask if they have any and maybe pickup.
Mine though has been hit by the power bug.
Sending off for repair/replacement.

I just noticed that play.com and amazon.co.uk have dropped the SIM free price to �370. I might go for this as I can't be bothered to mess around getting the phones unlocked...seeing how the price has dropped �30 over literally a couple of weeks I might hold out another two...I guess if competition stays strong they'll end up near the overall tesco price of around about �350ish - cheapest possible while ensuring some degree of profitability...
I believe the �330 from o2 is locked as I have seen many sellers selling locked o2 N8s on ebay and amazon marketplace.
Though that deep metallic blue colour is pretty tempting...
