Major problems with N8 "phone call" app

I've owned my N8 for just over two weeks, and have to say I am really pleased with it in almost every respect (camera, most apps, etc.). I feel the handset has received a lot of unfair "flak" - mostly from US tech sites which don't seem to be able to handle a cutting-edge smartphone from Europe which doesn't run iOS or Android - and I'd be very reluctant to give up my N8 now, even after such a short time.

I say all this, because I am experiencing major problems with one of the most important elements of my N8's software: the actual "phone-calling" app. Put simply, I now dread having to make and receive voice phone calls on the device, because when I do, the phone just seems to go crazy:

  • the display scrambles (parts of the screen get flipped upside-down and/or back to front), and seems to turn on and off;

  • the call/hangup onscreen buttons disappear and reappear (and don't respond to touches a lot of the time when they do appear);

  • the menu is almost impossible to use during a call, owing to the above problems;

  • voice-dialling over a Bluetooth headset doesn't appear to work (it doesn't recognise what I say - could this be a "train your phone" issue?);

  • at worst, the phone sometimes just reboots in the middle of a call (meaning I have to make excuses about losing the network connection 😡 ).

I wish I could capture screenshots of this occurring, but it's almost impossible to recreate the problems reliably "on demand", and the phone's UI is effectively useless during a call (see above), so a screenshot application might not work in this case.

For a while, I thought I was alone in this problem, but it sounds as if a few others are reporting their N8s rebooting spontaneously. I can't see how my experience could be a hardware problem with my N8, but if it might be, do you think I should return the device for a replacement (as even now, I don't want any other phone)?

If this is purely a software problem, it beggars belief that Nokia could've let a phone like the N8 out into the world with the voice-calling software so seriously compromised. Frankly, I hope this is just a hardware problem on my particular handset, because until I get to the bottom of this, my N8 is practically unusable as an actual phone. It's a crying shame, as the device excels in practically every other area, and it speaks volumes (pun not intended) that if I did have to return my N8, I'd want it repaired or replaced and not go for another phone.

Thoughts welcome - sorry for a bit of a rant, but having such a great handset which barely works as an actual phone, but is great otherwise, is a bit of a frustration 🙄

Many thanks,
Tim.

Sorry to "bump" this, but can I assume no-one else is getting these "phone app" problems?

Thanks - T.

Seems quite obvious you got a dodgy phone with soft & hardware issues. Maybe the proximity sensor plus other foibles. Contact your supplier for an exchange. That's what I'd do in your position.
I have no such call problems at all. Only thing I'd say bad about mine is the call quality.
It sounds very hollow compared to my N79.
Contact your supplier, get an exchange!!

Looks like that's what I'll be doing - I went into the store where I got the upgrade, and thankfully (if that's the right word) the problem came up exactly as I described it earlier. (Not the first time I tried making a call, though, which is odd.)

I agree that this seems to be hardware-related in some way - partly because I haven't head of anyone else experiencing this problem with the phone dialler, but also because I think it would be inconceivable for Nokia to release the N8's firmware with a key function in such a mess.

Anyway, I'm stumped, so it looks like I'll be returning my N8 - hopefully for repair or (if need be) replacement, as I'm still willing to give an otherwise very fine device a second chance (rather more willing than many out there would be in the circumstances, frankly).

One question here: if I end up with a replacement N8, would I be able to transfer my Ovi Store apps (including paid-for ones) to the new unit?

Many thanks for your help 😊

Tim

Hi
I strongly suggest you do an exchange if possible as Nokia haven't yet issued a fix to dealers for N8 related problems.
As for Ovi purchases,
"

I had an N79 and when I logged in to my account with the same password etc, all my N79 related stuff was still there so you should be ok.
Maybe someone else can confirm?

Well, I believe I may have found the cause of my N8's "freaking out" during certain phone calls... and I feel a bit silly :tongue:

I couldn't work out why the problems were intermittent, and never occurred when making or receiving a call to/from a number not in my Contacts database. Then, this morning, my wife called me from home, and suddenly it struck me that many of my phone calls are to/from our home number, and they almost always cause my N8 to go "weird".

During this particular call, the vital piece of evidence appeared on the N8 screen: the profile picture, or at least a small corner of it. It then dawned on me: the image I'd assigned to my own contact entry, must be the full-size version - all 1800-or so pixels square of it!

So, no wonder the poor device was "freaking out": it was trying to handle displaying a giant image on the screen during a phone call 😮 At least, I hope this was the cause of the problem - if so, it's just a shame that I had to hard-reset the phone, in the course of tracking it down...

In the meantime, perhaps this is a thought for the Nokia developers: maybe there should be a "check" in the Contacts app, to guard against silly people like me uploading giant images into Contacts, which could choke the system software? (At least I won't be making that mistake in future...)

Anyway, at least I shouldn't have to send it back now 😃

I think thats a word for the wise amongst us:icon14:
Hope that was all it was. I'll be careful too about the ringtone pics I assign.
