N8 video recording quality

Guys

I'm thinking about parting with my hard earned cash to get the N8. One aspect of the phone I'm concerned about though is video recording quality. The phone is supposedly HD (720p) capable in terms of recoridng but from the samples I've seen on the web the videos look quite compressed and laggy?

Can any owners of this phone give me their impressions on the recording quality?

Thanks,
A

Hi, IMO its great, take a look at my vids .. www.youtube.com/biggzyn80 all was recorded on n8, the "sweetest lie" song of the goo goo dolls was recorded with video stabilision OFF, after watching the others (in 720p full screen) you can see the difference.

Regards,
Biggzy.

Thanks for that. I guess what I really need to see is an untouched 720p video created by this phone to get a real idea of what it's like, youtube can be part of the problem...

Hi biggzy: does this mean that video stabilisation lowers the quality of the N8's footage, and should be turned off for best results, or the opposite?

Many thanks 😊

With it off you get better quality when zooming in, with it on theres more noise in the videos when zooming in dark scenes, so my advice is leave video stabilision OFF.

With the HX mod - its even better since it will do 30 FPS instead of the 24 by default. It gives a really stable picture by far.

Have to warn you though - the average bitrate is around 100Megabytes per minute for 720p 30fps (not Megabits). That is the best in its class - so you can potentially fill up your phone pretty quickly.

Another piece of advice - record only onto the onboard 16GB memory as your MicroSD may not be fast enough to keep up and cause stutters

Thanks biggzy - in that case, I think I'll be seeking out that "mobile phone tripod holder" pretty soon 😊

Some great info there, sounds really promising! One thing though, what is this HX mod and where I can find more info on it?

HX mod is here: http://hx-custom-roms.com/n8_goodies

You will need a full dev certificate to be able to sign this first before you can install it. I think some people talk about it on that page there and give you recommendations to get the cert.

Hope that helps..
