I have E71.
After long research of my phone flash memory. I have found that file Index in \private\1000484b\Mail2\ contains preview of all messages stored in phone messages.
This file like a database contains type of message, sender and some preview text and other information with link to file in "Mail2" folder structure.
This file is the key to all phone message. Remove, delete or fatal error in this file make all messages as unacceptable, phone will recreate this file and you lost all messages even if they exists.
My question: How can I rebuild Index from existing information ?
I need _rebuild_ not restore from backup or any.
Such details has not been published/documented by Nokia for the E71 or most any other Nokia S60 phone.
It might be possible to figure out the structure from Symbian^3 source code (assuming that an older S60 devices does it the same way).
Info on how to get FTP access to Symbian^3 source code here:

hi there ,
i have the complete "mail2" folder from my e71. the prob is i have 3000+ sms. the "INDEX" FILE got currupted and deleted. is there a way to "remake " or "restore the index file ?? a software or anything ?? please reply . hex viewr is great but its very cumbersome to go through all 3000+ msgs .
ps: the recovery data tools could extract index file , but its not working anymore 😞
