Viruses in apps

Hiya

Does anyone know how how to avoid viruses, malware, trojans etc in Apps that are not from the Ovi store??

I've found Kaspersky http://kaspersky-anti-virus-mobile-s602nd.en.softonic.com/symbian but there's a comment that it's v. slow and I didn't like it on PCs, and also for Zebra http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Anti-Virus_Utilities/Zebra_VirusCleaner_for_Symbian_OS_Phones.html but something about that is worrying (multiple hits on Google, but only one review) aslo most importantly it doesn't have the N97-mini listed as a supported device....

I took my bd to the vet 3 days ago, because she wouldnt put on weight. The blood tests came back today. She has something wrong with the way she takes in protein and fat. I think it might be hereditary

"bd" ??? That is such a GREAT reply, what a clever robot ... assuming someone hasn't signed up for a forum on handheld device OS thinking it to be a Pet's forum!! RoFLOL Part of me looks forward to the day the internet is tracked and spammers and others can be hunted down. But I know that when that dfay does come, helped by all the spammers and hackers who think they're liberating the net, it will be a very dark day indeed because it will be big business that will control it and their hold on governments will then become unshakeable. Enjoy your weekend 😃

I tried F-Secure a while ago . It is not very heavy and you can pick the trial version . It can search the complete system .
Anyway , I ended up removing it from the phone .

Thanks jApi NL ... that's some bedtime reading. I'm going to take your word for it and go for the install but where do I put it?? Phone Memory (C: ) > Data > Installs, or maybe Mass Memory (E: ) > Installs, or maybe ....???

What's with this filing system Nokia have created? It's an oxymoron!

Now of course it won't work on a Mini for some obscure reason!!

After buying the Symantec antivirus for my Nokia 9300, I am convinced that it is not really worthwhile to use an AV program on a hand-held device like the N97.

The N97 is already S-L-O-W enough without giving it something else to do.

Your best bet to avoid malware on your N97/N97 Mini:

1. Make frequent back-ups to removable media or to your desktop PC.

2. Avoid "freeware" programs from websites that offer games, etc unless you are absolutely sure that the program is not malware or spyware. BTW...many of these "free" programs "phone-home" with information about your phone so they pose a risk to your data security (this even happens on the iPhone!).

3. Read up on any commercial software before your buy and ONLY buy from recognized online dealers with good reputations.

4. Do not load any "hacked" software to get around buying it. If the person is smart enough to hack it, they probably are smart enough to put spyware inside it.

5. This just leaves the Ovi Store to worry about.

Thanks rdcinhou, great advice. Don't know if it would have prevented me from using what promises to be a great App though DEdit (and JBakTaskman) But what is the Mini slow with, surfing, games, movies ... for what I'm using it for it seems quick.

p.s. jApi NL I've seen the 3lib piece but it contradicts itself. So I checked its refs and the piece is nonsense. This seems to set the record straight:
http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/mobile-it/2010/07/07/symbian-s60-phones-targeted-by-botnet-building-viruses-40089460/

i.e. there are viruses, they are rare-ish, there will be more, don't panic - yet 😊

Hi Talvi .
NetQin is involved in selling Security software . That's about the only reason they are happy to announce some kind of virus or malware .
The article is posted about half a year ago . Since then millions of handsets are supposed to be infected .
At least mine isn't .....
Futher : why doesn't there exist a big issue about Security , on great Symbian-users Forums like AAS , when this is true ?

The 3-Lib site is the hard work of one member of the AAS-team . The site in in transition to : http://www.stevelitchfield.com/

😊 Regards jApi NL

Very true, but the Nokia manual warns about viruses, and certification, etc etc and some of the hard evidence for viruses in the report was not linked to NetQuin but to the Foundation .... anyway as you say, I'm one of a tiny minority talking about viruses etc and smarthones are everywhere so there can't be much practical problem - unless all of them are aready infected with bots that is! 😃
