Nokia N8 and earphones

Every time I try and plug some ear pieces into the 3.5mm jack, this continuous cycle of voice commands keeps kicking in and so far from being able to make use of the phones to hear media, I just get annoyed.

How can I turn this circituous loop off?

Many thanks.

Are you using some "standard" 3.5mm stereo headphones, or some with an in-line microphone (but "designed" for the iPhone)?

If its a standard earpiece, then try connecting to something else to confirm that they work fine - its possible that there's a fault with the headphones. Also see if you can borrow some from a friend/colleague to then determine if its a fault with the phone.

The final part is the iPhone headsets - they won't work with the N8, as Apple aren't using the standard 4 core layout.

Perhaps I should have called them ear-pieces - its the standard set that comes with the phone, no mic included, which is why I don't understand why this circuitous loop keeps happening.

I have tried toggling the Settings->Phone->Accessories default setting, but to no avail.

Something not right there - the 'phones that ship with the N8 include an in-line microphone on the remote.

OK, I see it does. But still, why does it keep going round and round prompting for a voice command, which I didn't have any intention of giving. I just want to listen to the media through the ear buds. How can I stop this ceaseless prompting for voice training?

Sounds like a possible/probable fault in the headset - do you have any other regular 3.5mm stereo headphones? Just try them - if it works, then its a fault with the supplied headset.

Sounds like the call button on the side of the control pod is stuck down. Try giving all the buttons a few presses to loosen them up.

Good thought.

So I prodded the buttons, including the call button, before plugging the connector in, and pressed them again afterwards. Then chose a media player of some kind and fired it up, but despite all the buttons appearing to move when pressed, this vicious repeat cycle persisted.

I think the headphones are busted, it definitely sounds like there's a button registering as pressed all the time - that's what prompts for a voice action.

It's either the headphones or there's something stuck in the socket causing a short. Do you have another pair of headphones around to try out?

I just tried the old headset from the N95. Suffered the same problem.

Not sure how something can be stuck in the socket when I can plug anything in that I like and it doesn't cause problems except when I plug something in.

What I mean is that I would expect odd behaviour with nothing plugged in if there was a foreign item in there.

True, but it's possible. If you've ruled out the headset, then the socket or the phone itself is faulty. It sounds like you're going to need to get it fixed 😞

Ah well. I have a fortnight before I start the commuting lark - so I'll nip up to the local Nokia centre and see what they say.

Looks like second fault like this.

Is the phone new?

For sure the updates aren't fixing this but who knows?

😉 Have you tried the new symbian PR 1.2? 😉

i popped my girlfriend's HTC headphones into my C7 and got this exact same thing.

using nokia headphones, no problem. why can't they all get along? 😉

does it help?

have you got a bumper and/or case for your phone?

the above recommendation can be impeded as some bumper manufacturers don't allow enough space by the headphone jacks to allow you to plug the headphones in properly. basically, they don't think to plug in the devices default accessories when they product test the case, which is irritating to say the least.

Hi,
yes, you can try ear pieces into 3.5 mm jack and i suggest you nokia N8 is the best ear phone.

Sorry for changing the subject slightly but this is to do with the N8 headphones so I didn't want to create a new thread.

I just wanted to say "THE N8 HEADPHONES ARE AWESOME!" 😮

Well compared to my 50 Sony Extra Bass ones they are, and also the three other in-ear headphones that I've compared.

They're loud, super-clear, have decent bass, and now that I've switched the rubber plugs they stay vacuumed to my ears 😎

I also like the way that the music pauses when I unplug the headphones, no more Kylie accidentally blasting out in the office :icon14:
