i think you can safely assume that my home wifi is a "known wifi point".

The result is what you wanted.

on my C7 you can disconnect WIFI, but then it automatically reconnects unless you go deep into a menu structure to re-arrange reconnection priorities.
which begs the question, why have that option on the widget, if the OS is going to over ride my decision?
it's poor design and implementation and there simply aren't enough layers of irony to justify the decisions.

so, why is it a problem with switching over? I've found that using wifi uses less power than 3g data. Do you only want it to switch over when there are active data connections?

i've answered this in a previous post:
because for certain apps, like SKYPE and WLM, my phone network gives me unlimited data usage and at home i'm at a hotspot where 3g is fast and, ironically, i have a nokia C7 which can really make the most of the coverage on offer...
surely what network i connect to is MY choice, not symbian's. and like i say, why bother having an easy to access "turn network scanning off" if it doesn't work.
WHAT'S THE POINT. it's just sh*t.
I Think N9 Is Running Meego its not cancelled.

The device exists and is for sale. MeeGo, however, is no more.
Nokia is, of course, putting some effort in maintaining the N9 firmware version, but is not spending any significant amount on MeeGo, nor are they going to release any new MeeGo based phones.
Intel has also abandoned MeeGo, and is now working on "Tizen" instead (with Samsung, where Tizen apparently is based on Samsung's mobile linux platform, and is also ditching Nokia's Qt based UI and apps in favour of a HTML5 based UI).
So, from all practical purposes, MeeGo is dead, even if its incarnation lives for a while in the form of the N9, but after that it'll be really dead.

First of all ... N9 is not running MeeGo it is running maemo!!!

Well, at least Nokia calls the OS of the N9 MeeGo Harmattan v1.2, and not, e.g., maemo v6 (as opposed to maemo v5 on the N900).
So Nokia is going all in with Windows Phone OS, betting the house on it.
But here in the US, Win Phone has no traction most regular people (non tech don't even know it), i don't know anyone who has any interest in buying one.
And i would guess that USA would be the best market Microsoft has for their WinPhone OS or home market.
So i would guess that Nokia will fail with WinPhone OS and fire Elop.
My interest is what happens after that, considering that most review i read about the N9 and Meego were very positive and i have heard Elop say some version of Meego will continue to be develop in the Nokia labs.
I predict that as Nokia/WinPhoneOS fails, Nokia starts releasing Meego phones and makes a comeback.
transitioning to an new OS is not easy, Blackberry, MS Vista, Apple OS 9 to X and so on.
Nokia just need the balls to see it through.
Elop is correct on ecosystems, but Nokia already has great map nav and developers , and can partner with other for the rest, like yahoo for search and email and online docs and others.
What's your take boys?

No matter how good Nokia's "MeeGo" for the N9 is, no Nokia comeback (if any) is going to be depending on MeeGo. If betting on Windows Phone fails for Nokia, then whatever it is that will help their turnaround, it won't be MeeGo (it might be something based on Linux, but it still won't be MeeGo).

Why is Meego dead?
From what i have seen the N9 is really good.
