Is anyone going to this? I wouldn't mind popping along to wander around the exhibition but I hear that they are going to be charging about 70 for the priviledge. Is this true?
Symbian Exposium
If you look at the front page you can get a 10% discount on entry. I wanted to go but I'm unfortunately working and so cannot make it. Hope those that do go take many photos and let me know how it is.
just had a look - it seems the exhibition is going to set me back 170 (ok with the 10% discount thats 153) doesn't this seem steep to anyone else? Most trade show exhibitions are free to enter (3GSM in Cannes certainly was) but I don't object to making some form of payment but charging this much reeks of profiteering.
I'm going to be there. AAS will of course being doing on the spot reports and intereviews. We hope to be updating you from the conference floor.
Although there is an exhibition this isn't really intended for the general public in the same way that say CeBIT is. The primary focus is for devlopers and those in the industry.
Rafe, we're going to be doing a bit more than just that...
Anway, yes the Developer Exposium is not a 'Trade Show' in the way 3GSM and CeBIT are considers. Yes there is an Exhibitors Hall for people using Symbian OS, but the main thrust should be clear if you look at the programme.
there are 3 or 4 seperate 'strands' of conferences and seminars on Developing for Series 60, Symbian 6.1, 7.0 and 7.0x, Taking a Device from proto to market, and various other techy and business stuff. That's what you pay for.
ou have to remember Symbian like to be backroom boys, and not push SYMBIAN PHONES as much as other OS companies, they are happy for the telco's to brand the phones as theirs and leave Symbian as a much smaller bullet point. Its worked so far.
I take your point on the various streams and think that these are good value for money - however I think the entrance for just the exhibition and keynotes is too pricey at 170odd quid. Especially as Microsoft run similar events where the whole shebang is free for developers. I think my main point is that excessive charges like this is not the ideal way to foster a developer community.
IMHO Regardless of how Symbian decides to market itself and whether or not its happy for operators to push its phones with their branding the key differentiator which It will have is the applications which run on its phones. As such it should be doing everything in its power to get folk developing for it.......
The difference here is that M$ have the money to make these things free, and the need to. Symbian have neither the money or the need.
Switchbalde, you're half right. They on;t have the money, but they do have a need. They are slowly re-engaging the Developer Community (albiet not as fast as the community would like).
There should be a 'Hobby Developers and Community' stand at the Exposium, but obviously they can't accomodate everyone.
And there may be a few announcemnts from Dev Expo that will delight a lot of people here.

Not as much need as M$ who struggle to get a real phone manufacturer to take them seriously, but obviously there is always a need to engender support.
