Hoping someone can help.
I live in Australia but bought a P800 during my last trip to Hong Kong. Phone works fine except a little issue sending email. SE support recommended that I get the firmware upgraded. When I presented at an authorised SE service centre I was lectured on the lack of International warranty. (I didn't read the fine print and believed my HK retailers lies!...no-one to blame but myself)
When I enquired as to whether they would do the software upgrade for a charge they said they were reluctant to do so. This was because their previous experience with other Ericsson products indicated that if they attempted to load the Australian software on hardware from another country, the phone would freeze up and not be recoverable.
A few questions:
1. Is the hardware the same for both Hong Kong and Australia? If not, what are the differences?
2. Can an Australian software load be put on a P800 from Hong Kong successfully?
3. Does anyone have a suggestion of what I should do? (other than courier the phone to Hong Kong)
My current firmware is:
Phone: CXC162002 R1D
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R2C
Organiser: CXC162001 R1F01
CDA: CDA162001/9 R1F04

I had a similar problem. I bought my P800 in Dubai and then returned to Turkey to find that SE will not honour any warranties given on phones purchased out of Turkey. They said that they would offer an upgrade for a charge ( I didn't find out how much). I new someone that works for the local authorised service centre and they upgraded it free of charge. I had no problems after this upgrade and suspect that you would also be OK. 😃
Sammyboy,
I bought my P800 here in Australia and my versions are almost identical to yours. I would not suspect that the firmware version is your problem here. The only difference is this:
Mine (oz version):
CDA162001/5 R1F04
Yours:
CDA162001/9 R1F04
So you actually have a later version!
The hardware should be identical. Australia just doesn't have a big enough market for these phones to justify changes in the manufacturing process. I suspect that this shop is just being a wally.
Thanks Jeckel
Just a quick question. Do you have any problems sending email? I have a BigPond Home email account and no matter whether I use Telstra GPRS or Dial-up into BigPond, I can send email via the SMTP host (mail.bigpond.com). I can receive email on POP3 fine.
This is the only problem I am having and the reason why I am looking to update the software.

Sammyboy, Jeckel,
you guys had any experience with GPRS roaming? Optus say they don't have any agreements for international GPRS roaming. This seems crazy. I'm O/S and can't even MMS on my Australian P800. Actually, I'm not sure they have any agreements for plain old GSM WAP either.
