Desk Clock

Q. My Nokia N97 (mini) sits happily open, angled nicely on my desk. I'd like it to act as a desk clock, i.e. keep its screen on, showing the current time. Power isn't a problem, as I usually have it plugged into a microUSB lead.

A. One solution, if you can live with the N97 'closed', is to use the popular utility Keylock Clock. This can be obtained for free from drjukka.com or for a token amount from the Nokia Ovi Store. The utility's raison d'etre is to pop up the time in 'keylocked' mode when you press the silver S60 key, plugging a gap in the N97's basic functionality. Normally the time disappears after a few seconds, but here's the trick: activate the keylock (by sliding the toggle switch) first, and only then plug the N97 into the power source. After a few seconds, you'll be in desk clock mode.

Alternatively, if you have your heart set on a clock with the phone open, download the more specific Night Stand Touch, a commercial application in the Ovi Store. This emulates a traditional clock radio display – it's designed for night use but is still very visible in office lighting. Moreover, it keeps the screen lit and works with the phone 'open' – which is hopefully what you wanted. Even if you have had to dip into your pocket to the tune of £1.50!
